Paul McCartney invites you on a musical journey to Egypt Station, estimated time of arrival September 7, 2018 by way of Capitol Records. Sharing a title with one of Paul’s own paintings, Egypt Station is the first full album of all-new McCartney music since 2013’s international chart-topping NEW. Preceded by two of its tracks just released as double A-sides–plaintive ballad “I Don’t Know” and raucous stomper “Come On To Me”—Egypt Station was recorded between Los Angeles, London and Sussex, and produced (with the exception of one Ryan Tedder track) by Greg Kurstin (Adele, Beck, Foo Fighters). Of the forthcoming album’s enigmatic title, Paul says, “I liked the words ‘Egypt Station.’ It reminded me of the ‘album’ albums we used to make.., Egypt Station starts off at the station on the first song and then each song is like a different station. So it gave us some idea to base all the songs around that. I think of it as a dream location that the music emanates from.” True to the inspiration behind its title, Egypt Station’s 14 songs combine to convey a unique travelogue vibe. Between the opening and closing instrumentals “Station I” and “Station II,” each song finds Paul capturing a place or moment before transporting the listener seamlessly to the next destination. Stops along the way include an acoustic meditation on present day contentedness (“Happy With You”), a timeless anthem that would fit on virtually any album of any McCartney era (“People Want Peace”), and an epic multi-movement closer clocking in at seven minutes with a song suite structure harkening back to the days of Paul’s previous combos (“Despite Repeated Warnings”). The result is a kaleidoscopic journey through myriad musical locales and eras, yet firmly rooted in the here and now–with Paul’s singular unmistakable melodic and lyrical sensibility serving as a guide. ― Amazon

Roger Waters, the man who equated “education” with “thought control” in his pseudo-opera The Wall, is now back and appealing to higher culture in his new opera Ça Ira. Moreover, this is a real opera, with singers, a chorus, and an orchestra with not a single dreamy, overlong electric guitar solo in sight. Fans of Pink Floyd will find little in Ça Ira to satisfy their jones for “the Floyd,” although there are many standard musical features associated with the classic rock staple group that have been carried over into this work — crushingly slow tempi, somber and monotonous singing, and a mania for pristine recordings of sound effects. At one point, a volley of musket fire makes you jump out of your seat. Ça Ira was undertaken with librettists Etienne and Nadine Roda-Gil not long after The Wall, but it took Waters so long to put the finishing touches on it that his collaborators have since died. Waters made a smart decision in using librettists for this project, as his own corroded worldview would certainly have undone the basic idea, the message of which is “there is hope.” That said, the Roda-Gils took on too large of a swath of the French Revolution to cram into three acts, and the listener gets no more than a picture postcard sense of its flavor. All of the principal singers in this recording are required to take on multiple roles in Ça Ira, and this results in a twofold effect. The first is that it brings Ça Ira into the realm of opera-oratorio, and even to some degree Brechtian “Lehrstück,” and secondly, it’s hard to tell what character a singer is supposed to be portraying if one is not following the libretto. Expect the motion picture version soon!

Naturally, Bryn Terfel and Ying Huang are top-drawer opera singers, and Terfel relishes the opportunity, chewing on as much scenery as he can get his hands on. Huang, for her part, hangs in there, but she does not sing as though she loves this material. Ça Ira would be a hard opera for a singer to love, as there is no characterization through the singing whatsoever, and characters themselves are not given enough of the floor to engage us. The orchestration is handled with taste and some sophistication, but in terms of melody, Ça Ira is the sing-songiest opera since the pre-revolutionary days of Thomas and Sally. Wherever the fundamental of the harmonic movement is, the melody line follows, and vice-versa. In spots where there is no harmonic foundation, Waters resorts to scalar or bugle-call like figures that, while effectively passing as notes to hang the words onto, do not constitute melody in and of themselves. This kind of texture overall would be tremendously monochromatic and dull for the average opera listener.

However, if the name above the title were Andrew Lloyd Webber, then Ça Ira would be considered better than average. Moreover, there is potential good to be reaped if Ça Ira gains some popularity. If it proves to your standard-issue stoner that you don’t have to be a dork to enjoy an opera, that’s terrific. If it helps raise the public profile of the fine singers involved here, that is great, too. Nevertheless, as an opera of which the notion “there is hope” is the main theme, at least musically Ça Ira isn’t very hopeful. ― Allmusic

Rock n Roll is the fourth studio album by Ryan Adams, released on November 4, 2003. The album features the hit single “So Alive”, and includes guest appearances by Adams’s then girlfriend, actress Parker Posey, former Hole and Smashing Pumpkins bass player Melissa Auf der Maur, and Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong. Adams describes the album as “the most rock thing I have ever done,” and notes that in spite of the album’s mixed reception, recording it was “fun as fuck.”

The album was recorded in two weeks, in response to Lost Highway’s refusal to release Love Is Hell. The ensuing standoff was resolved “by being very diplomatic,” according to Adams. Rock n Roll became the primary product, while Love Is Hell was released quietly as two separate EPs, and eventually combined into a single release.

The album was recorded at Stratosphere Sound, guitarist James Iha’s studio in Chelsea, Manhattan, New York.

Flesh + Blood suggested that Roxy Music were at the end of the line, but they regrouped and recorded the lovely Avalon, one of their finest albums. Certainly, the lush, elegant soundscapes of Avalon are far removed from the edgy avant-pop of their early records, yet it represents another landmark in their career. With its stylish, romantic washes of synthesizers and Bryan Ferry’s elegant, seductive croon, Avalon simultaneously functioned as sophisticated make-out music for yuppies and as the maturation of synth pop. Ferry was never this romantic or seductive, either with Roxy or as a solo artist , and Avalon shimmers with elegance in both its music and its lyrics. “More Than This,” “Take a Chance with Me,” “While My Heart Is Still Beating,” and the title track are immaculately crafted and subtle songs, where the shifting synthesizers and murmured vocals gradually reveal the melodies. It’s a rich, textured album and a graceful way to end the band’s career. ― Allmusic

Couldn’t Have Said It Better is a 2003 album by Meat Loaf. Only for the third time in his career, he released an album without any songs written by Jim Steinman (not counting the bonus tracks). Although Meat Loaf claimed that Couldn’t Have Said It Better was “the most perfect album [he] did since Bat Out of Hell”, it was not as successful. Three singles were released: “Did I Say That”, “Couldn’t Have Said It Better” and “Man of Steel”, all with little chart impact. The album was recorded for Universal Music Germany’s Polydor division and was licensed to Mercury Records for its UK release and Sanctuary Records for US release, while global distribution was handled by parent company Universal Music Group. Most of this was caused by lack of promotion on behalf of Sanctuary, the company that released the album in the US, and few actual singles being distributed, especially in the UK—his biggest market. The single “Couldn’t Have Said It Better” featuring Patti Russo reached the AC Top 40 in the US, while the videos also had low budgets, in stark contrast to his 1990s videos.

However, the album was a minor success worldwide and reached number 4 on the UK Albums Chart. There were many writers for the album including Diane Warren and James Michael. Warren has written for Meat Loaf in the past and had some very big hits. Michael had never written for Meat Loaf before and it was only his songs that were released as singles from the album.

Several versions of the album have been released, some with bonus-material. Also, the color of the album cover is different in the UK (blue) from the other territories (red).

R.E.M. began to move toward mainstream record production on Lifes Rich Pageant, but they didn’t have a commercial breakthrough until the following year’s Document. Ironically, Document is a stranger, more varied album than its predecessor, but co-producer Scott Litt — who would go on to produce every R.E.M. album in the following decade — is a better conduit for the band than Don Gehman, giving the group a clean sound without sacrificing their enigmatic tendencies. “Finest Worksong,” the stream-of-conscious rant “It’s the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine),” and the surprise Top Ten single “The One I Love” all crackle with muscular rhythms and guitar riffs, but the real surprise is how political the mid-tempo jangle pop of “Welcome to the Occupation,” “Disturbance at the Heron House,” and “King of Birds” is. Where Lifes Rich Pageant sounded a bit like a party record, Document is a fiery statement, and its memorable melodies and riffs are made all the more indelible by its righteous anger. In other words, it’s not only a commercial breakthrough, but a creative breakthrough as well, offering evidence of R.E.M.’s growing depth and maturity, and helping usher in the P.C. era in the process. ― Allmusic

Consider True Meanings Paul Weller’s comedown from a combustive, creative decade begun with 22 Dreams. That 2008 double album was co-produced with Simon Dine, who proved to be such a vital collaborator for Weller that the singer/songwriter found it difficult to shake off the producer’s influence after the two parted ways acrimoniously in 2012. Weller’s initial reaction to the split was to follow the straight and narrow on 2017’s appealing A Kind Revolution but True Meanings, delivered just a year later, finds him mellowing and entering a reflective groove. No amplifiers are cranked on True Meanings: the entire enterprise is anchored on folky finger-picking and strumming, which is in turn dressed in elegant orchestrations. Often, the lush strings and gentle horns are reminiscent of the orchestrations Robert Kirby arranged for Nick Drake’s Five Leaves Left and Bryter Layter, yet True Meanings doesn’t carry a melancholy undercurrent. Weller is in a sober mood but he’s not brooding, he’s reflecting. Thoughts of mortality drift across his mind — such as in “Bowie,” a tribute that’s more elliptical than its title suggests — but Weller seems settled and comfortable, more mindful than sad. The stateliness of the orchestral arrangements prevents True Meanings from slipping into a hazy folk netherworld. All the strings and brass not only accentuate the songs, highlighting the jazzy changes of “Soul Searchers” or the light swing of “Gravity,” they help frame this measured song cycle, directing attention to how Weller isn’t wallowing, he’s meditating upon love, loss, and hope as he enters his sixties. ― Allmusic

Label: Universal Records | Genre: Southern Rock

For their third album, the Atlanta Rhythm Section, newly signed to Polydor after a couple of releases for Decca, put their best foot forward with some good-time Southern-flavored rock & roll for the album’s opener, “Doraville,” a catchy tribute to their hometown. They also weave a subtler spell with “Jesus Hearted People,” which presents their love of Southern culture in more general terms. From there it’s off to the suitably bluesy moments on “Close the Door” and the moody instrumental “Blues in Maude’s Flat,” and into swamp rock territory on “Join the Race (To Inner Space),” which also slips in a few hints of progressive rock jamming, especially on the keyboards and the guitar break. And that’s all just the first side — the second side of the original LP shows the band in a more introspective and experimental mode (especially on “The War Is Over”), but doesn’t skimp on the musicianship, basic and otherwise, and “Angel (What in the World’s Come Over Us)” even adds harmonies almost worthy of Crosby, Stills & Nash. The resulting record ended up breaking a few rules at the time — most Southern bands (apart from the Allman Brothers) weren’t supposed to get too experimental — but it touches all the right buttons to make good listening three decades later and counting. Sad to say, at the time it only peaked at number 74 (which would be their highest LP chart placement for the next couple of years), and yielded a pair of regional hits, “Doraville” and “Angel”; but it’s worth tracking down for more than a couple of listens for a sharper take on the permutations of “Southern rock.” ― Allmusic

Roger Waters may not have made an album of new material between 1992 and 2017, but he was very active during that quarter-century. He toured regularly, wrote an opera, reunited Pink Floyd for the 2005 charity concert Live 8, and revived The Wall several times, turning the self-absorbed rock opera into a political piece. Is This the Life We Really Want?, his fourth song cycle, picks up on this thread, functioning as barbed protest music for the age of Brexit and Trump. Waters doesn’t disguise his bile — there’s a lament for “The Last Refugee” and he spits out “picture a leader with no f****** brains,” a clear broadside against Trump — but the album doesn’t seethe with rage. With its deliberate tempos, wide soundscapes, operatic guitar solos, and swelling crescendos, it is recognizably a Waters album or, perhaps more accurately, a Floydian one. Where his other solo albums sported productions that tied them to their time — quite garishly so in the case of 1987’s Radio K.A.O.S. — Is This the Life We Really Want? is warm and supple, thanks in no small part to a band featuring guitarists Jonathan Wilson and Gus Seyffert, drummer Joey Waronker, and keyboardist Roger Manning. The key player, though, is producer Nigel Godrich, who gives this a sonic richness evoking late-period Pink Floyd without specifically nodding toward any particular record. Certainly, Is This the Life We Really Want? lacks the straightforward narrative or melodic thrust of The Wall, but it isn’t as somnolent as The Final Cut, and if the songs don’t call attention to themselves, they nevertheless form a long suite that works as a sustained mood piece. ― Allmusic

Half-Speed Mastered

1982 will forever be known as the year that the punks got class — or at least when Joe Jackson and Elvis Costello, rivals for the title of Britain’s reigning Angry Young Man — decided that they were not just rockers, but really songwriters in the Tin Pan Alley tradition. (Graham Parker, fellow angry Brit, sat this battle out, choosing to work with Aerosmith producer Jack Douglas instead.) Both had been genre-hopping prior to 1982, but Jackson’s Night and Day and Costello’s Imperial Bedroom announced to the world that both were “serious songwriters,” standing far apart from the clamoring punkers and silly new wavers. In retrospect, the ambitions of these two 27-year-olds (both born in August 1954, just two weeks apart) seem a little grandiose, and if Imperial Bedroom didn’t live up to its masterpiece marketing campaign (stalling at number 30 on the charts without generating a hit), it has garnered a stronger reputation than Night and Day, which was a much more popular album, climbing all the way to number four on the U.S. charts, thanks to the Top Ten single “Steppin’ Out.” Night and Day had greater success because it’s sleek and bright, entirely more accessible than the dense, occasionally unwieldy darkness of Imperial Bedroom. Plus, Jackson plays up the comparisons to classic pop songwriting by lifting his album title from Cole Porter, dividing the record into a “night” and “day” side, and then topping it off with a neat line drawing of him at his piano in a New York apartment on the cover. All of these classy trappings are apparent on the surface, which is the problem with the record: it’s all stylized, with the feel eclipsing the writing, which is kind of ironic considering that Jackson so clearly strives to be a sophisticated cosmopolitan songwriter here. He gets the cosmopolitan, big-city feel down pat; although the record never delivers on the “night” and “day” split, with the latter side feeling every bit as nocturnal as the former, his blend of percolating Latin rhythms, jazzy horns and pianos, stylish synths, and splashy pop melodies uncannily feel like a bustling, glitzy evening in the big city. On that front, Night and Day is a success, since it creates a mood and sustains it very well. Where it lets down is the substance of the songs. At a mere nine tracks, it’s a brief album even by 1982 standards, and it seems even shorter because about half the numbers are more about sound than song. “A Slow Song” gets by on its form, not what it says, while “Target” and “Cancer” are swinging Latin-flavored jams that disappear into the air. “Chinatown” is a novelty pastiche that’s slightly off-key, but nowhere near as irritating as “T.V. Age,” where Jackson mimics David Byrne’s hyper-manic vocal mannerisms. These all fit the concept of the LP and they’re engaging on record, but they’re slight, especially given Jackson’s overarching ambition — and their flimsiness is brought into sharp relief by the remaining four songs, which are among Jackson’s very best. There is, of course, the breakthrough hit “Steppin’ Out,” which pulsates anticipatory excitement, but the aching “Breaking Us in Two” is just as good, as is the haunting “Real Men” and the album opener, “Another World,” a vibrant, multi-colored song that perfectly sets up the sonic and lyrical themes of the album. If all of Night and Day played at this level, it would be the self-styled masterpiece Joe Jackson intended it to be. Instead, it is a very good record that delivers some nice, stylish pleasures; but its shortcomings reveal precisely how difficult it is to follow in the tradition of Porter and Gershwin. ― Allmusic

24 tracks-Two CDs worth of music. Playable on both standard CD and SACD players, 36 page booklet. At long last, these 24 thought-to-be-lost recordings by the late, great Gene Clark is now in release on Sierra Hybrid SACD and Sierra High Fidelity on 2 LP audiophile vinyl set. These incredible recordings, which have never been released commercially, are from the original analog master studio recording sessions held in Los Angeles between 1964 and 1982. Gene Clark was one of the most influential musical pioneers of the rock era. A pivotal figure at the births of rock music’s golden trifecta of hyphenated subgenres (folk, psychedelic and country) in the1960s, he earned his rightful place in the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame as a founding member and principal songwriter of The Byrds. After leaving the Byrds at the height of their fame in early 1966, Clark embarked upon a fearless solo career that embraced everything from chamber pop and progressive bluegrass to acoustic ballads and sweeping cosmic prog. His rich body of work has spawned cover versions by a wide range of artists, including Robert Plant/Alison Krauss, The Eagles, Tom Petty, Linda Ronstadt and others. Always forward-looking, always prolific, Clark left behind a rich legacy of professionally recorded music both released and unreleased. This album introduces previously unreleased studio sessions from Clark’s pre-Byrds days in 1964, to his 1982 reunion with former bandmates, Chris Hillman and Michael Clarke, as Nyteflyte. Since his passing in 1991, many of Gene Clark’s home demo recordings and various live recordings have been released. Actual studio recording sessions were rare and their existence was more rumor than fact until now! This collection of “lost” — Amazon
