In 1974, Quincy Jones, who already had a wide range of musical credits behind him, opted to enter the R&B mainstream by hiring vocalists and overseeing recordings in a commercial vein released under his name. The first of them was Body Heat, which went gold, and Jones followed with a series of records including 1981’s million-selling The Dude and the 1990 Album of the Year Grammy-winner Back on the Block. Meanwhile, he switched record labels, leaving A&M for his own Warner-distributed Qwest in the early ’80s. That has tended to make the assembly of a comprehensive best-of difficult, but Universal’s Hip-O reissue division specializes in licensing material from other labels to construct its Ultimate Collection releases, and this one borrows seven out of 18 tracks from Qwest to add to Jones’ A&M hits, making it the definitive one-disc compilation of Jones’ pop/R&B recordings of 1974-1999. Jones himself participated in the selection, which does not strictly follow chart rankings, since a couple of R&B Top 20 hits (“I Don’t Go for That” and “Slow Jams”) are missing, while a few non-chart items are included. To get more songs in, the singles edits have been used in many cases. But all the major hits are here. The chronological sequencing allows an appreciation of how Jones’ approach changed over the years. The ’70s stuff, which holds up surprisingly well, is tasty R&B, much of it groove-oriented, up-tempo music. By the late ’80s, however, there are a lot of big, bland ballads that showcase superstar vocalists (Ray Charles, Barry White, etc.) and sound self-important. Like his protégé, Michael Jackson, who went from the rocking “Billie Jean” to the messianic “Man in the Mirror” in the same period, Jones seems to have begun believing his press clippings, and his work suffered accordingly. ― Allmusic

Night Passage is the eleventh album by Weather Report, released in 1980. The tracks were recorded in August 1980 at The Complex studios in Los Angeles (before a crowd of 250 people who can be heard on a couple of tracks), except for “Madagascar”, recorded live in Osaka, in June of the same year. The album introduces a new member to the band, percussionist Robert Thomas Jr. Night Passage loses the over-done production layers of some of Weather Report’s earlier releases (most notably 1978’s Mr. Gone). What is lost in layers of overdubs is made up in solo improvisation in the classic jazz tradition.

All of a sudden, George Benson became a pop superstar with this album, thanks to its least representative track. Most of Breezin’ is a softer-focused variation of Benson’s R&B/jazz-flavored CTI work, his guitar as assured and fluid as ever with Claus Ogerman providing the suave orchestral backdrops and his crack then-working band (including Ronnie Foster on keyboards and sparkplug Phil Upchurch on rhythm guitar) pumping up the funk element. Yet it is the sole vocal track (his first in many years), Leon Russell’s “This Masquerade” — where George unveiled his new trademark, scatting along with a single-string guitar solo — that reached number ten on the pop singles chart and drove the album all the way to number one on the pop (!) LP chart. The attractive title track also became a minor hit single, although Gabor Szabo’s 1971 recording with composer Bobby Womack is even more fetching. In the greater scheme of Benson’s career, Breezin’ is really not so much a breakthrough as it is a transition album; the guitar is still the core of his identity. ― Allmusic

Escape was a groundbreaking album for San Francisco’s Journey, charting three singles inside Billboard’s Top Ten, with “Don’t Stop Believing” reaching number nine, “Who’s Crying Now” number four, and “Open Arms” peaking at number two and holding there for six weeks. Escape flung Journey steadfastly into the AOR arena, combining Neal Schon’s grand yet palatable guitar playing with Jonathan Cain’s blatant keyboards. All this was topped off by the passionate, wide-ranged vocals of Steve Perry, who is the true lifeblood of this album, and this band. The songs on Escape are more rock-flavored, with more hooks and a harder cadence compared to their former sound. “Who’s Crying Now” spotlights the sweeping fervor of Perry’s voice, whose theme about the ups and downs of a relationship was plentiful in Journey’s repertoire. With “Don’t Stop Believing,” the whisper of Perry’s ardor is crept up to with Schon’s searing electric guitar work, making for a perfect rock song. One of rock’s most beautiful ballads, “Open Arms,” gleams with an honesty and feel only Steve Perry could muster. Outside of the singles, there is a certain electricity that circulates through the rest of the album. The songs are timeless, and as a whole, they have a way of rekindling the innocence of youthful romance and the rebelliousness of growing up, built from heartfelt songwriting and sturdy musicianship. ― Allmusic

Physical is the ninth full-length studio album by the British-Australian-American singer Olivia Newton-John, released on 13 October 1981 by MCA Records. The album was produced and partly written by her long-time record producer John Farrar. Recorded and mixed at David J. Holman’s studio in Hollywood, California, Physical became one of Newton-John’s most controversial and sexual records, and her most successful studio album to date. Musically, the album features considerable use of synthesizers, and it explores lyrical themes such as love and relationships, sex, kinesthetics, and environmental protection. Upon its release, the album received generally positive reviews from music critics, many of them considering it to be Newton-John’s best work. The album charted high in several countries, including the United States, Japan, and Newton-John’s native Australia, becoming one of the most successful albums of the early 1980s. It also ranks among the best-selling albums by Australian solo artists, selling more than 3 million copies worldwide.

Herman’s Hermits are widely seen as a lightweight, novelty cousin to the Beatles, fronted by a lovably dorky moppet and musically negligible. Sure, they are lightweight at times, Peter Noone is a lovable moppet, and their popularity would never have been possible without the Beatles, but one listen to Retrospective proves that they were not lacking in the musical department. Setting aside “I’m Henry the VIII, I Am” (which proves everything the critics say about the band), the group, and producer Mickie Most, had a surefooted straight-ahead approach that let the songs’ hooks sink in deeply. Noone’s pleasant voice and the band’s sympathetic but never boring backing always goes down easy, and when they get excited — like on “Hold On” or “A Must to Avoid” — they almost rock. Thanks to the generous outlay of tracks and the improved sound, Retrospective takes over as the definitive collection of the Hermits’ work. It leaves off their final two singles recorded for RAK in 1970, but otherwise the 26 songs here include 23 that made the Top 40 in the U.K. or the U.S. Many of the tracks are among the best the British Invasion had to offer, including “A Must to Avoid,” “I’m into Something Good,” “There’s a Kind of Hush,” and “Listen People.” It also shows the band’s range with the lovely Baroque pop of “East West,” the laid-back R&B of “(What A) Wonderful World,” the folk-rock with strings of “Don’t Go Out in the Rain,” the British psychedelia of “Museum,” and the Bee Gees-styled orchestrated pop of “Here Comes the Star.” The band was really much more versatile then given credit for and not as lightweight, either, as melancholy tracks like “No Milk Today” and “My Sentimental Friend” prove. Another thing Retrospective makes clear is that, much like another underrated ’60s group, they were able to maintain a high-quality output even as the hits were smaller and farther between; 1968’s “Sunshine Girl,” 1967’s “I Can Take or Leave Your Loving,” and 1968’s “Something’s Happening” are just as hooky and memorable as their early work, and may even be better songs as they are the work of a more mature and assured group. They just weren’t able to make as big an impact due to the times they were released. If you have even a passing interest in the band you should pick this disc up; it will win you over and soon you will join the proud ranks of Hermit boosters. ― Allmusic

With Breakfast in America, Supertramp had a genuine blockbuster hit, topping the charts for four weeks in the U.S. and selling millions of copies worldwide; by the 1990s, the album had sold over 18 million units across the world. Although their previous records had some popular success, they never even hinted at the massive sales of Breakfast in America. Then again, Supertramp’s earlier records weren’t as pop-oriented as Breakfast. The majority of the album consisted of tightly written, catchy, well-constructed pop songs, like the hits “The Logical Song,” “Take the Long Way Home,” and “Goodbye Stranger.” Supertramp still had a tendency to indulge themselves occasionally, but Breakfast in America had very few weak moments. It was clearly their high-water mark. ― Allmusic

Olivia Newton John’s Come on Over is country tunes, folk ballads, and more. Her own arrangement and adaptation of the traditional “Greensleeves” is exquisite, haunting, and shows Newton-John is more than just a pretty face. Her hit catalog was already nine songs deep, and “Come on Over” was the tenth of close to 30 visits to the Top 40 in a 14-year period. Fred Rose’s “Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain” and a cover of Dolly Parton’s classic “Jolene” open and shut side one with the country side of things while the Diane Berglund/Jim Phillips composition “Pony Ride” is more of a piano ballad , nicely bridging the Western music with the song which would go to the top of the adult contemporary charts, the brilliant title track written by Barry Gibb and Robin Gibb of the Bee Gees. “Come on Over” came right on the heels of one of the Bee Gees’ most brilliant compositions, “Fanny (Be Tender With My Love),” charting just three months prior to “Come on Over.” What this record becomes is a textbook on the separation between what is good and what is great. The album is quality stuff through and through, but even a good reading of a Beatles classic like “The Long and Winding Road” pales next to the majesty of John Farrar’s simple production and Olivia’s direct and heart-wrenching vocal on the title track. It is so moving that every other performance becomes a supporting act to the main attraction. It is also the only song that charted on the Top 40 from this consistent and entertaining project. “It’ll Be Me” is the next best thing to “Come on Over,” a Hank Marvin/John Farrar composition showing Newton-John’s relationship to Cliff Richard’s Shadows, drummer Brian Bennett providing the backbeat. Cliff Richard had his biggest U.S. success up to this point in time with “Devil Woman” as this record was charting simultaneously. It would be four years until Olivia and Cliff’s duet “Suddenly,” from the Xanadu soundtrack, made its splash. “Don’t Throw It All Away” and “Who Are You Now?” are beautiful middle of the road performances here, and Farrar’s production is really understated and sadly underrated. His grasp of the pop format is major league and worthy of note. Farrar’s “Small Talk and Pride” and Harlan Collins’ “Wrap Me in Your Arms” are elegant and perfect in their construction. Olivia Newton-John was a superstar before Mariah Carey and Celine Dion, and as beautiful as those pop divas can sing, it is John Farrar’s understanding of his artist which makes these albums by Olivia so heartfelt and magical. “Come on Over” is a tremendous song on a very good album. More than just the Bee Gees meets the Shadows featuring Olivia Newton-John, Come on Over is a true pop classic. ― Allmusic

While mostly accurate, dismissing Never Mind the Bollocks as merely a series of loud, ragged midtempo rockers with a harsh, grating vocalist and not much melody would be a terrible error. Already anthemic songs are rendered positively transcendent by Johnny Rotten’s rabid, foaming delivery. His bitterly sarcastic attacks on pretentious affectation and the very foundations of British society were all carried out in the most confrontational, impolite manner possible. Most imitators of the Pistols’ angry nihilism missed the point: underneath the shock tactics and theatrical negativity were social critiques carefully designed for maximum impact. Never Mind the Bollocks perfectly articulated the frustration, rage, and dissatisfaction of the British working class with the establishment, a spirit quick to translate itself to strictly rock & roll terms. The Pistols paved the way for countless other bands to make similarly rebellious statements, but arguably none were as daring or effective. It’s easy to see how the band’s roaring energy, overwhelmingly snotty attitude, and Rotten’s furious ranting sparked a musical revolution, and those qualities haven’t diminished one bit over time. Never Mind the Bollocks is simply one of the greatest, most inspiring rock records of all time. ― Allmusic

Paul Simon designed In the Blue Light as a way to focus attention on songs of his that he believed never got the acknowledgment they deserved. It’s a reflective project, so it’s fitting that it arrived in September of 2018, as Simon was in the process of wrapping up a farewell tour. By their nature, farewell tours are exercises in nostalgia, but self-cover albums offer an artist an opportunity to surprise. That’s an opportunity Paul Simon seizes on In the Blue Light. Working with a diverse set of collaborators, including Bill Frisell, Wynton Marsalis, and Bryce Dessner of the National, Simon winds up with an elastic, elegant album that plays with jazz and chamber music as much as it does folk and worldbeat. With the exception of “Some Folks’ Lives Roll Easy,” whose flowing lines now seem abstract thanks to opaque cloisters of piano and saxophone, the arrangements aren’t radically different, yet the execution differs wildly from the previous versions. Everything on In the Blue Light is deliberate, gentle, and subtle, placing as much emphasis on the words and melody as the instrumentation, which isn’t necessarily the case with the dense original albums. It’s possible to enjoy In the Blue Light as high-end background music, but it also rewards close listening, not only because the arrangements invite appreciation of the clever song construction but what the song selection reveals about what Simon thinks of his own work. Taken on that level, In the Blue Light shows he has the same affection for deep tracks as many of his fans — “One Man’s Ceiling Is Another Man’s Floor,” “Some Folks’ Lives Roll Easy,” “René and Georgette Magritte with Their Dog After the War,” and “Can’t Run But,” all being the relatively better-known songs that would snag the curious — but it also shows that he thinks 2000’s You’re the One is underappreciated. A whopping four songs — amounting to nearly half of Blue Light — come from You’re the One, including the epic seven-minute “Darling Lorraine,” where Simon demonstrably acts out the lyrics. Here, it’s possible to hear the lively wit not just in the song but in the performance, revealing that for this singer/songwriter, this is not a collection of confessions: this is craft, through and through. ― Allmusic
