While Richard Thompson’s devotees will tell you the man is a triple-threat genius — passionate vocalist, compelling songwriter, and sterling guitarist — even his most loyal supporters will concede that the dour nature of his songs and the no-frills production of many of his albums make the bulk of his catalog tough sledding for the uninitiated. Given this, 1991’s Rumor and Sigh is arguably the best album for those wanting to sample Thompson’s work for the first time. It captures Thompson at the top of his form on all fronts, but also gives his songs just enough polish to make them approachable for the unconverted, and though it’s several shades darker than the average adult-contemporary album, it honors Thompson’s obsession with romantic despair and the less pleasant quirks of fate without sounding depressing in the process. Producer Mitchell Froom tricked up Thompson’s sound a bit, but his approach added to the material rather than interfering with it; the topsy-turvy keyboards and sharp, snapping drum sound on “Gray Walls” and “You Dream Too Much” actually add to their narrative drama, and Froom coaxed some of Thompson’s most soulful vocals on “Why Must I Plead” and “I Misunderstood.” Thompson actually gets funny on “Don’t Sit On My Jimmy Shands” and the darkly hilarious “Psycho Street,” and Thompson fans who like his work straight with no chaser will be knocked flat by “1952 Vincent Black Lightning,” perhaps the best traditional-style number in his songbook, and the harrowing “God Loves A Drunk,” an unnerving tale of several kinds of addiction. While Rumor and Sigh is quite slick by Thompson’s standards, its clean lines and bright mix serve both the songs and the bandleader quite well, and make Thompson’s tunes sound like the radio hits they’ve always deserved to be. ― Allmusic

Some things never change — the sky is blue, two plus two equals four, the sun rises in the east, and Alice Cooper will make albums where he sneers out spooky lyrics as long as he can draw breath. Cooper hadn’t had anything resembling a hit since the mid-’90s, but the man clearly had no desire to retire, and though he was 69 years old when he released Paranormal in 2017, he still sounded admirably spry and hadn’t lost his voice or his charisma. Paranormal was released not long after Cooper reunited with surviving members of the original Alice Cooper band for some surprise shows, and the advance word on the album had it that Cooper was going to write and record with them. While bassist Dennis Dunaway and drummer Neal Smith pop up on a few tracks of Paranormal, the two songs they wrote with him, “Genuine American Girl” and “You and All of Your Friends,” appear on Paranormal as bonus tracks, and anyone hoping for a blast of sleazy glory in the manner of School’s Out or Killer will be a bit disappointed. (Then again, when the Coop brought a bunch of the original guys on board for 2011’s Welcome 2 My Nightmare, no one noticed, so maybe the fans have faulty expectations.) While it features Dunaway, Smith, and producer Bob Ezrin (who was at the controls for Cooper’s best ’70s work), Paranormal more closely resembles Cooper’s hair metal-flavored work of the ’90s, though Ezrin has given this material a more up-to-date sheen. Thankfully, Paranormal is a livelier and more entertaining listen than Trash or Hey Stoopid, and while he aims for high spookiness on “Dead Flies,” “The Sound of A,” and the title track, he seems to be having more fun with wittier numbers like “Dynamite Road,” “Private Public Breakdown,” and “Fallen in Love” (“and I can’t get up!”). The band delivers the goods with admirable precision and some honest enthusiasm, while the guests include Larry Mullen from U2, Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top, and Roger Glover from Deep Purple (and who would’ve guessed that those guys would ever be on an album together, let alone with Alice Cooper?). Paranormal isn’t the return to form one might have hoped for, but it’s no embarrassment either, and Cooper appears to be having a grand time while giving his fans a good show for their dollar. ― Allmusic

Having established that their 21st century reunion was not a passing thing, Suede decided to stretch themselves with The Blue Hour, the third record they’ve made since reuniting in 2013. Unlike that year’s Bloodsports or its 2016 sequel Night Thoughts, The Blue Hour isn’t produced by Ed Buller, who helmed their three big records of the 1990s (Suede, Dog Man Star, Coming Up), it’s the work of Alan Moulder, the veteran producer whose fingerprints were all over alternative rock of the ’90s that had little to do with Brit-pop. Truth be told, Suede always stood slightly apart from the Brit-pop pack, sounding a little too louche and glamorous to be part of it, but this decadent romanticism also serves them well in middle age, as it offers avenues for exploration and reflection — avenues that the band seize here. The Blue Hour isn’t as streamlined and assured as Night Thoughts, which wound up as an elegant refinement of the ideas offered on Dog Man Star, yet that’s its charm. Suede decide to ratchet up the melodrama on The Blue Hour and seize upon any opportunity to take a detour, dressing the album with layers of strings, choirs, electronic voice, and poetic digressions. That some of these accouterments wind up detracting from the stylish foreboding that’s the record’s primary color seems to be the point: Suede realize they’ve mastered such sustained moodiness, so they’re taking opportunities to break the spell, or perhaps stir up dreams or nightmares. If the results are occasionally patchwork, that only adds to the album’s appeal and it also suits Suede, who always found majesty within secondhand threads and hand-me-downs. Twenty-five years after their debut, they still retain that power, while finding ways to surprise within their firmly defined style. ― Allmusic

The first disc of the ROAD TO RUIN 40th ANNIVERSARY DELUXE EDITION features a remastered version of the original stereo mix for Road To Ruin and a new 2018 40th Anniversary Road Revisited mix created by Stasium, who strips off the original record’s commercial gloss and restores the album to its punk rock core.

The second disc offers up over twenty unreleased recordings, including rough mixes for every album track, starkly different alternate takes of two songs, and two unreleased outtakes: “I Walk Out” and “S.L.U.G.” – unfinished during the original recording sessions in 1978, and completed by Stasium for this anniversary release. Other highlights include three different versions of “I Wanna Be Sedated,” including the “Ramones-on-45-Mega-Mix!” released in 1988 as part of the campaign for the Ramones Mania compilation, as well as acoustic versions of “Questioningly,” “Needles And Pins,” and “Don’t Come Close.”

The final disc has a previously unreleased recording of the band’s entire 1979 New Year’s Eve concert, which was mixed live by Stasium, and broadcast on WNEW-FM. Buddy Guy’s music has changed a great deal since this album was recorded in Chicago in 1981. It is possible that Guy has never sounded better than this, tearing into some deep indigo blues, letting his guitar wail loud on every cut, and playing with inspiration, especially on the title cut and “Dedication to the Late T-Bone Walker,” a track that seems to spring from some place deep within himself. Nor was he the only one on fire at the sessions. Brother Phil Guy shares the guitar work and contributes vocals to both “Garbage Man Blues” and “Mellow Down.” The recording makes no attempt to capture a wide audience. This is Buddy Guy playing and feeling the blues, pure and simple, without any sense of compromise — and it’s all the better for it, putting much of the rest of his catalog into perspective. This reissue is similar to the recent reissue of their live album How The West Was Won, since the formats on offer include an expansive super deluxe edition box set that includes the remastered audio on two CDs and four vinyl LPs and a two-DVD set of The Song Remains The Same featuring the full theatrical version of the film plus bonus content including four performance outtakes that were not part of the original film: Celebration Day, Over The Hills And Far Away, Misty Mountain Hop, and The Ocean. The box also includes a DVD of the entire album in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround and PCM Stereo.

As well as the big box, there’s a 4LP vinyl set, a blu-ray audio with the 5.1 mix (96kHz/24 bit) and stereo mix and a humble remastered two-CD package.

Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy is the ninth studio album by Elton John. The album is an autobiographical account of the early musical careers of Elton John (Captain Fantastic) and Bernie Taupin (the Brown Dirt Cowboy). It was released in May 1975 by MCA in America and DJM in the UK. It debuted at number 1 on the US Billboard 200, the first album to do so, reportedly selling 1.4 million copies in its first 4 days of release, and stayed in that position for seven weeks. Though they would all appear on later albums as guest musicians, this was the last album with the original lineup of the Elton John Band (guitarist Davey Johnstone, bassist Dee Murray, and drummer Nigel Olsson). Murray and Olsson, who had formed John’s rhythm section since 1970, were sacked prior to the recording of the follow-up album Rock of the Westies, while Johnstone would leave in 1978.

Instead of repeating the formula that made Elton John a success, John and Bernie Taupin attempted their most ambitious record to date for the follow-up to their breakthrough. A loose concept album about the American West, Tumbleweed Connection emphasized the pretensions that always lay beneath their songcraft. Half of the songs don’t follow conventional pop song structures; instead, they flow between verses and vague choruses. These experiments are remarkably successful, primarily because Taupin’s lyrics are evocative and John’s melodic sense is at its best. As should be expected for a concept album about the Wild West, the music draws from country and blues in equal measures, ranging from the bluesy choruses of “Ballad of a Well-Known Gun” and the modified country of “Country Comfort” to the gospel-inflected “Burn Down the Mission” and the rolling, soulful “Amoreena.” Paul Buckmaster manages to write dramatic but appropriate string arrangements that accentuate the cinematic feel of the album. ― Allmusic
