The 2-CD/DVD collection comes loaded with a massive amount of music recorded by the band, which at the time featured: multi-instrumentalist frontman Ian Anderson, guitarist Martin Barre, drummer Clive Bunker, pianist John Evan, and bassist Glenn Cornick. The first disc contains the album s 10 original tracks, plus five bonus tracks that include both the U.K. and U.S. stereo versions of “Teacher. ” All the songs are newly mixed by Steven Wilson and approved by Ian Anderson. The second disc includes newly remastered versions of rare tracks and singles recorded around the same time as Benefit, such as “Sweet Dream” in both stereo and mono. The audio-only DVD, which is available exclusively with this version, is packed with 58 tracks, including the album and bonus tracks in 5.1 surround sound. It also contains the U.K and U.S. versions of the album. George Benson’s sound is so recognizable that, in its way, it’s quite comforting to hear his voice or his guitar come across on the radio or in a club. His recordings have been polished and extravagant in many cases, but there are those signature elements — his relaxed delivery and silky touch on the strings and his voice, as evocative as a cool breeze floating across a hot summer night. Songs and Stories doesn’t deviate from his formula a great deal, but it doesn’t have to. He’s chosen ten ubiquitous pop tunes from a variety of songwriters (and one by a relatively new kid on the block), and with the help of producers John Burk and Marcus Miller, he puts them across in fine style. The set opens with James Taylor’s “Don’t Let Me Be Lonely Tonight,” with the great Brazilian guitarist Toninho Horta on acoustic to contrast with Benson’s electric. The tune simply eases down into the listener, and more than a desperate plea as it was in Taylor’s case, this version is a request that offers plenty of rhythm — courtesy of a beatbox by Butterscotch and Paulinho Da Costa’s percussion. Another standout on the set is the slow strolling version of Bill Withers’ “A Telephone Call Away,” with guest vocalist Lalah Hathaway in duet, Gerald Albright’s saxophone, and Bobby Sparks II’s B-3 all adding to the band’s textural palette. Following it is an intimate small-group setting of a cover of “Someday We’ll All Be Free” by Lalah’s late father, Donny Hathaway. Young Southern soul singer/songwriter Marc Broussard contributes “Come in from the Cold” to the mix. Benson is accompanied by Tom Scott on saxophones, guitarist Jubu, Miller’s bass, and Sparks’ Hammond, embellished by some nice Rhodes work by Greg Phillinganes. The reading of Tony Joe White’s “Rainy Night in Georgia” is unusual, and laden with strings, but it works because Benson doesn’t try to create a definitive version of anything; he simply creates his own. There are also two fine surprises at the end of the disc: an excellent version of Smokey Robinson’s “One Like You” with a large ensemble; and a downright funky take on Lamont Dozier’s “Living in High Definition,” which is sure to be a hit at contemporary jazz radio. Benson, Jubu, and Wah Wah Watson all contribute electric guitars, with Miller playing vibes as well as laying down layers of beats atop his own string arrangements. Benson fans should have a ball with Songs and Stories. It’s consistently smooth in texture, its arrangements are elegant, and it’s sequenced beautifully. ― Allmusic

Doors super fan Nettie Pena recorded her favorite band during their stint as the house band at the L.A. nightclub London Fog, capturing seven songs from a performance held sometime in May 1966. These recordings sat undiscovered for years but surfaced at the tail-end of 2016, just as the Doors were scheduled to celebrate their 50th anniversary. London Fog 1966 features those seven songs, supplemented by two tracks of tunings that could’ve easily been excised, on CD and vinyl, accompanied with a bunch of memorabilia designed to entice collectors. Although the quality of the production is high — the oversized box is handsome and the photo inserts and posters luxurious — the attraction is the live music, the earliest known recording of the Doors. Over these seven songs, the Doors pledge allegiance to the blues, covering B.B. King’s “Rock Me” and Muddy Waters’ “I’m Your Hoochie Coochie Man,” ending their set by stumbling through a version of “Lucille” that suggests Jim Morrison was a little reserved in comparison to Little Richard. Often, that politeness is the appeal of London Fog 1966: the Doors aren’t a great blues band, emphasizing texture over rhythm, and that awkwardness is endearing on this club set. Also, this tendency reaches an unexpected fruition on “Strange Days,” an original that pops up fully formed toward the end of the set. Unlike “You Make Me Real,” an obvious attempt at replicating electric blues that would later resurface on Morrison Hotel, “Strange Days” is a clear progression, a statement of purpose that seems to appear out of nowhere toward the end of the set. The connection between “Strange Days” and the rest of the London Fog set is tenuous, but that’s also why this collection is charming. Most of the time, the Doors are stumbling through blues and rock & roll covers, exuding a sense of confidence that exceeds their competence, then the focus suddenly sharpens and the Doors sounds like who they were at the outset: majestic and mysterious, a group with no discernible roots. Aside from these moments, London Fog showcases a band who doesn’t know its own attributes, and that’s why it’s worthwhile: it’s the sound of a band discovering its own strengths. ― Allmusic

Buena Vista Social Club is the debut album by the eponymous ensemble of Cuban musicians directed by Juan de Marcos González and American guitarist Ry Cooder. It was recorded at Havana’s EGREM studios in March 1996 and released on September 16, 1997, on World Circuit. Despite its success, it remains the only standard studio album exclusively credited to the Buena Vista Social Club.
Buena Vista Social Club was recorded in parallel with A toda Cuba le gusta by the Afro-Cuban All Stars, a similar project also promoted by World Circuit executive Nick Gold and featuring largely the same lineup. In contrast to A toda Cuba le gusta, which was conceived as a revival of the son conjunto, Buena Vista Social Club was meant to bring back the traditional trova and filin, a mellower take on the Cuban son and bolero, as well as the danzón.
A critical and commercial success, the album’s release was followed by a short concert tour in Amsterdam and New York’s Carnegie Hall in 1998. Footage from these dates, together with the recording sessions in Havana, were shown on the Buena Vista Social Club documentary by Wim Wenders, released in 1999.

Teased upon its release as Sheryl Crow’s final album — a promise that seems perhaps a tad premature for an artist who was just 57 upon the record’s release — Threads is intended as a summation of her musical worldview. Specifically, it’s designed to draw connections between Crow, her idols, and the generations who followed her, all through a variety of covers, collaborations, and duets. The cast of characters is formidable, encompassing titans and hipsters along with a host of musicians who are happy to cruise along in the middle of the road. Crow often found herself in that cozy MOR, an adult contemporary-adjacent positioning that tended to undersell her sense of adventure and craft. Threads touches upon both aspects, albeit to different degrees. The adventure crashes to the forefront with the booming presence of Chuck D on “Story of Everything,” and simmers on her collaborations with St. Vincent (“Wouldn’t Want to Be Like You”) and Lucius (“Don’t”), two artists who are associated with an indie world where Crow never quite belonged. As alluring as the dreamy girl group sway of “Don’t” is, Crow seems more at home when she’s standing toe-to-toe with Nashville’s new generation — Maren Morris and Jason Isbell are both here, with Chris Stapleton bridging the gap between country-pop and Americana — or sharing space with legends who’d amassed a vast catalog long before Tuesday Night Music Club appeared in 1993. Some of this can veer toward the fusty — it’s hard to call a duet with Joe Walsh, where they claim it’s “Still the Good Old Days,” anything but that — it’s saved by good cheer and her sharp sense of craft. These two qualities give “Prove You Wrong,” sung with Morris and Stevie Nicks and co-written with Al Anderson, a clean punch, makes the swampy Stapleton collaboration “Tell Me When It’s Over” feel like an unearthed gem from The Globe Sessions, and gives the Willie Nelson duet “Lonely Alone” a sense of bruised beauty. Many of the covers also benefit from the slick professional chops of Crow and her friends; Brandi Carlile plays with her phrasing on a reading of George Harrison’s “Beware of Darkness,” while Jason Isbell helps kick Bob Dylan’s “Everything Is Broken” into a boogie. Such little grace notes are abundant on Threads but, then again, there’s an abundance of everything on Threads. Running a leisurely 75 minutes, Threads doesn’t seem sequenced so much as unedited; it’s as if instead of finishing the album, she decided to dump every track out into the marketplace. This makes for a somewhat somnolent record, but it’s better to think of it as not a complete meal but rather a buffet that contains something to please every palette. ― Allmusic

Beneath the Eyrie is the seventh album from American alternative rock band Pixies, released on September 13, 2019 by BMG/Infectious. Produced by Tom Dalgety, and preceded by the singles, “On Graveyard Hill” and “Catfish Kate”, the album was recorded in a remote, converted church in upstate New York. The band were influenced by their Gothic surroundings during the writing and recording process, with vocalist and guitarist Black Francis stating: “I wanted to intermingle with the spirit world, with life and death and with the mystical and a more surreal landscape.”
