David Gilmour sang about an endless river on “High Hopes,” the last song on what appeared to be the last Pink Floyd album, 1994’s Division Bell. Twenty years later, the same phrase became the title of The Endless River, an album designed as Pink Floyd’s last. Assembled largely from Division Bell outtakes initially intended as an ambient project dubbed The Big Spliff, the record was sculpted into shape in 2014 by Gilmour, Youth, Andy Jackson, and Roxy Music’s Phil Manzanera by adding guitar and Nick Mason’s drums to original tapes that were laden with keyboards from the late Rick Wright. He’s not the only missing member of Floyd, of course. Roger Waters is absent, as is the long-gone Syd Barrett, but their ghosts are present throughout the primarily instrumental The Endless River. Mortality is on the mind of the two remaining Floyds, mentioned obliquely in “Louder Than Words,” the only song with lyrics here, but felt through allusions to all their possible pasts. A song unfurls with washes of synth pulled from “Welcome to the Machine,” the four sides are structured like an ongoing amorphous suite à la “Shine on You Crazy Diamond,” snippets of Atom Heart Mother slide against guitars that beat to the rhythm from “Run Like Hell,” creating an impression of a band in a state of repose: they’re not indulging in their past so much as reflecting on it, watching a tide of memories repeatedly roll in and out. Although very little about The Endless River is risky by design — it is one of the most popular bands of the 20th century returning to slowly pulsating aural waves that characterized their biggest albums — the very shift away from vocals realigns the band with not only Wish You Were Here (which this often resembles) but their pre-Dark Side records for Harvest, undercutting the arena-pleasing aspirations of the Gilmour-led reunion while underscoring how Pink Floyd always were an arty band at their core. Instrumentals are also a savvy solution to the trouble of working with uncompleted tapes — it’s easier to turn them into an ever-shifting suite than to graft on melodies — but the comforting sway of swelling synthesizers and the soaring Gilmour guitar are sometimes unexpectedly moving. Gilmour and Mason know this is their farewell, so they’re saying goodbye not with a major statement but with a soft, bittersweet elegy that functions as a canny coda to their career. —Allmusic

In stylistic terms, large portions of Ana Caram’s first U.S. album could easily have been recorded in 1962; it’s as if time had stood perfectly still since “Desafinado” became a hit. Yet this is all for the good for this Antonio Carlos Jobim protegé, who can comfortably give material by the more contemporary writer Djavan, and even Carole King’s “You’ve Got a Friend,” the bossa nova treatment. Like most seductive Brazilian female singers, Caram is just a bit off-pitch and gets away with it. She also plays guitar skillfully in the Joao Gilberto rhythmic manner, and occasionally writes her own tunes (“Renovacao,” “Rainbow”) in an attractive classic bossa nova idiom. The revered Jobim sits in on piano and contributes a few vocal harmonies on two of his songs (“Meditation,” “Anos Dourados”); the Chesky recording also diligently picks up his groaning. Paquito D’Rivera chirps on clarinet in the tongue-twisting “O Que Vier Eu Traco” and turns up on alto sax on Paulo Jobim’s first-rate “La Cumbia,” phrasing in the lilting Getz manner though he can’t help but slip in a bop run or two. Steve Sacks plays low-key, moaning alto flute on several tracks, and Carlos Alberto de Oliveira and Café handle the delicate percussion. The production is typical low-key, spare-textured, painstakingly recorded Chesky fare — and unreconstructed bossa nova fans need not hesitate. ― Allmusic

For the most part, 1979’s Eve is somewhat overlooked as being one of the Alan Parsons Project’s finest work, when in fact it involves some of this group’s most intricate songs. The album’s concept deals with the female’s overpowering effect on man. Each song touches on her ability to dissect the male ego, especially through sexual means, originating with Eve’s tempting Adam in the beginning of time. Not only does this idea gain strength as the album progresses, but a musical battle of the sexes begins to arise through each song. The gorgeous “You Won’t Be There” spotlights man’s insecurity. Sung by Dave Townsend, its melodramatic feel sets a perfect tone. The classically enhanced “Winding Me Up” follows suit, based on a woman’s ability to dominate her mate and opening up with sound of a wind-up doll being cranked. Other gems include the bitter but forceful “Damned If I Do” sung by Lenny Zakatek, and the dominating fury of “Lucifer,” a powerful instrumental. Even the loutish “You Lie Down with Dogs” bears wit with its gender inclined mud-slinging. The female vocalists, Lesley Duncan and Clare Torry do a splendid job of representing the females point of view throughout the album. Not only does Eve solidify its main idea, but the songs are highly entertaining with catchy rhythms and intelligent lyrics. Musically, the tempo appealingly switches back and forth from slow to quick, as does the temperament of the album. Somehow, Eve is dismissed as one of this band’s greatest efforts, when in fact it’s one of their finest marriages of both concept and music. ― Allmusic

The Hungarian bassist Arnie Somogyi, a long-time luminary of the British contemporary scene, recently formed an alliance with the US doctor-turned-jazzman Eddie Henderson, this cemented with an appearance ar Ronnie Scott’s and this recording. Much of the music performed here by Somogyi’s Ambulance band emerged during a musical development residency at the Snape Maltings, with Henderson added for a May 2006 tour and for this 2007 recording.

Pianist Tim Lapthorn’s engaging Walking Wounded, the album’s opener, ebbs and flows in the modern way, with Henderson’s clarion flugelhorn preceding Paul Booth or Rob Townsend’s bustling tenor. In his note, Somogyi explains that most of these pieces are programmatic with allusions to the band’s Suffolk experience; thus the perky Captain Courageous is “about a fisherman on Aldeburgh beach who only goes out in really bad weather”. Lapthorn’s wheezy melodica conveys the wave sounds, as the tempos chop and change. Henderson’s poised muted horn opens Lapthorn’s ballad Tumbledown, the composer’s piano interlude confirming his status as a player to watch.

Here and elsewhere on this stimulating album, it’s the sense of ensemble possibilities that strikes you, with subtle variations of tempo and changes of mood, the soloists adding value, the compositional palette atractively varied. There are no simple riffs or blowing heads here, no dominant voices either, more a congenial collective endeavour that certainly deserves your attention. The Who’s 1982 tour, which was all in North America apart from two warm-up dates at the Birmingham NEC in England, was their last to feature Kenney Jones on drums and they wouldn’t tour again until 1989. The tour promoted the recent ‘It’s Hard’ album, which had been released in June 1982, and the set list included a number of tracks from that album, some of which the band would only play live on this tour. This concert film features the show from the second of their two nights at New York’s Shea Stadium and was filmed on October 13th 1982. Although a couple of tracks have appeared on compilations, this is the first official release of the full show and features restored footage and newly mixed sound.. ― Amazon

Following on the heels of an album where he repudiated his past with his greatest backing band, Blood on the Tracks finds Bob Dylan, in a way, retreating to the past, recording a largely quiet, acoustic-based album. But this is hardly nostalgia — this is the sound of an artist returning to his strengths, what feels most familiar, as he accepts a traumatic situation, namely the breakdown of his marriage. This is an album alternately bitter, sorrowful, regretful, and peaceful, easily the closest he ever came to wearing his emotions on his sleeve. That’s not to say that it’s an explicitly confessional record, since many songs are riddles or allegories, yet the warmth of the music makes it feel that way. The original version of the album was even quieter — first takes of “Idiot Wind” and “Tangled Up in Blue,” available on The Bootleg Series, Vols. 1-3, are hushed and quiet (excised verses are quoted in the liner notes, but not heard on the record) — but Blood on the Tracks remains an intimate, revealing affair since these harsher takes let his anger surface the way his sadness does elsewhere. As such, it’s an affecting, unbearably poignant record, not because it’s a glimpse into his soul, but because the songs are remarkably clear-eyed and sentimental, lovely and melancholy at once. And, in a way, it’s best that he was backed with studio musicians here, since the professional, understated backing lets the songs and emotion stand at the forefront. Dylan made albums more influential than this, but he never made one better. ― Allmusic

ony/Legacy’s 2016 single-disc The Ultimate Collection is the first career-spanning Roy Orbison compilation since their double-disc Essential from a decade earlier. At 40 tracks, Essential would seem to have an edge over The Ultimate Collection, but the 2016 compilation has a significant advantage in that it contains the original hit versions of “Running Scared” and “In Dreams,” iconic hits present only as re-recordings on the double-disc set. This is a significant boost for Ultimate, yet the collection still has its flaws, chief among them a non-chronological sequencing — it’s disconcerting to hear the posthumous “I Drove All Night” follow “Oh, Pretty Woman” at the outset of the set — and how it emphasizes Orbison’s post-Traveling Wilburys recordings over his early Sun sessions, which are represented only by “Ooby Dooby.” A few other notable hits are missing — the seasonal standard “Pretty Paper,” “Blue Angel,” and “I’m Hurtin’,” plus the cult favorite “Communication Breakdown” — which may prevent this collection from truly being called “The Ultimate,” but this nevertheless remains the best single-disc collection of Orbison’s career ever assembled. ― Allmusic

word of warning: the notes to this CD may detract from the lovely music it contains. German ensemble Blue Chamber Quartet commissioned journalist Cathrin Kahlweit to write a brief essay for each of the work’s 20 movements, first-person vignettes describing the lives of children in 20 countries that seemingly have no discernable relationship to Corea’s gentle, sophisticated miniatures.

Corea wrote this suite of pieces for piano in the 1970s and ’80s, and it has been recorded both in the original version and in various arrangements numerous times. The pieces are delightful — playful, lively, graceful, and inventive — and there is nothing about them that marks them as entertainment only for children. This is music that can be savored by anyone with a taste for directly communicative new music. The music works beautifully in this arrangement by group member Thomas Schindl, scored for piano, harp, vibraphone, and double bass, along with a part for guest percussionist Sven von Samson. The colorful and unusual instrumentation creates an even broader expressive palette than the piano version, and the evocative percussion atmospherics that surround some of the pieces add about 10 minutes to the total duration of the suite. The playing is delicate and spirited throughout, and the sound quality of the SACD is balanced and detailed. ― Allmusic
