When it comes to Christmas, there are two camps. There are those who find it commercial and hollow, and those who are bewitched by the season’s traditions, music, and unique magic. 1 fall decidedly in the latter category. lt’s long been an ambition of mine to record a Christmas CD, and when I approached Günter Pauler with the idea last year, he was more than enthusiastic.

So I set out upon the formidable task of choosing my favorite Christmas songs. 1 decided on sorne timeless standards, and a few unknown gems. Then I sat down and penned a few of my own (destined to become evergreens!). Günter and I set aside two weeks in August to lay them down.

So Margaret and I boarded a plane and headed to Northeim Germany where we met lan Melrose, spent a while kicking around sorne ideas, and then started recording! lt’s a bit strange to be singing about Santa in the dead of summer, but we had little trouble summoning the Christmas spirit. 1 sure hope you like result.

Christmas albums are usually done to appease recording artists who have had some success; they rarely sell well because the holiday season is short, but some disprove the stereotype and sell seemingly forever — like this one. The Supremes put their warm harmonies on 12 classic Christmas songs, everything from “White Christmas” to a rousing “Joy to the World.” Diana Ross’ angelic, sweet, innocent voice is a perfect match for favorites like “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” and “Santa Claus Is Coming to Town.” A trio of producers contributed to make this an unforgettable classic: Hal Davis, Harvey Fuqua (Moonglows), and Marc Gordon (who later managed the 5th Dimension). After three consecutive Top Five Pop albums in 1970 alone, it was somewhat of a no-brainer that Motown would want to include a holiday long-player to that list. The Jackson 5’s Christmas Album (1970) combines classic favorites as well as a handful of compositions penned by the Corporation. This all-star team of Motown staffers and musicians boasted composer Bobby Taylor, Deke Richards (guitar), Freddie Perren (keyboard), Fonce Mizell (keyboards), and label co-founder Berry Gordy. As they had done for each of the Jackson 5’s previous platters, they carefully crafted and significantly modernized familiar seasonal selections. Leading off the effort is an unusual (for a pop act, anyway) two-part interpretation of “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,” commencing with a fairly rote reading before kicking into high gear during a fittingly R&B-inspired coda. They follow with an undeniably soulful update of “Santa Claus Is Comin’ to Town” and the fun and funky “Up on the Rooftop,” which also adds instrumental elements of their hit “The Love You Save” with a few bars of “Here Comes Santa Claus” likewise worked into the mix. “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” is another standard that has been infused with a fresh spirit, once again yielding a well-chosen and adeptly executed revision. Although not as drastically overhauled, “Frosty the Snowman” and “I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus” are none the less thoroughly enjoyable. In terms of originals, the lovely “Give Love at Christmas” informed covers by fellow Motown staples the Temptations — who used the tune as the title track for their 1980 Christmas entry — Johnny Gill, and even a reggae version by the Tamlins. The Jacksons similarly shared the brisk and upbeat “Someday at Christmas” with the Temptations and Stevie Wonder, as well as Diana Ross, whose take is one of the highlights of her Very Special Season (1998) outing. ― Allmusic

Popular songs are often associated with the vocalists that made them famous but few artists actually have the distinction of having a “theme” song along the lines of Bob Hope with “Thanks for the Memories.” Even fewer can claim to have two theme songs attached to them and Andy Williams is one of those fortunate stars. After “Moon River” became forever linked to Williams, he recorded a holiday song for his first Christmas album that gave him a yuletide hit and theme song. “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year” was the right song at the right time for Williams when he began to perform it on his highly successful NBC Christmas specials that featured the whole Williams clan. Both the song and the television specials were so memorable, it wasn’t long before Williams was crowned “Mr. Christmas.” Of course having a full album of wonderful holiday songs perfectly performed doesn’t hurt either and the Andy Williams Christmas Album was an instant hit when released in 1963 and has since become a traditional classic. Along with “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year,” Williams cheerfully celebrates with the spirited medley “Happy Holidays/The Holiday Season” and is at his playful best on the irresistibly raucous “Kay Thompson’s Jingle Bells.” He also wraps his voice around chestnuts like “White Christmas” and “The Christmas Song” with all the warmth of a favorite blanket, while a soaring version of “O Holy Night” is both enchanting and moving. His tender reading of the lesser-known “Sweet Little Jesus Boy” is as beautiful and serene as a crystal clear winter’s night, but it is the instantly catchy opening line of “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year” that people remember the most. It is a fitting theme song not only for Andy “Mr.Christmas” Williams, but for the season as well and a sparkling highlight from a classic holiday album. ― Allmusic

Christmas is vocalist Michael Bublé’s first full-length holiday-themed album since his 2003 EP Let It Snow. As with that album, Christmas features Bublé backed by small ensembles as well as his big band and orchestra, and includes a handful of classic Christmas songs. In that sense, the album is a rather old-school affair, with Bublé in prime Bing Crosby-meets-Dean Martin vocal style tackling such chestnuts as “It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas,” “Silent Night,” and “I’ll Be Home for Christmas.” There are also some fine, contemporary, if still retro-sounding, pop moments here including Bublé’s duet with the British female pop trio the Puppini Sisters on “Jingle Bells,” and his inspired, slightly melancholy reworking of Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You.” Ultimately, Christmas is a warm and inviting album that showcases Bublé’s impeccable vocal chops. ― Allmusic

Ella Wishes You a Swinging Christmas is a charming, warmly humorous — and yes, swinging — set of classic Christmas tunes. The program is familiar, from bouncy singalongs like “Jingle Bells” to slinky ballads like a downright sexy “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,” but Fitzgerald treats each song with exactly as much respect as it deserves. And so Frank Loesser’s “What Are You Doing New Year’s Eve” is wistfully romantic and Sammy Cahn and Jule Styne’s “Let It Snow” is kittenishly enticing. As always, Norman Granz’s production avoids the schlock that drowns some holiday sets. This is as good as jazz Christmas albums get. ― Allmusic

Herb Alpert turned to jazz’s Shorty Rogers — then toiling in the L.A. film and TV studios — for voice and string arrangements on his Christmas album, and Rogers in turn went all out for schmaltz. Rogers’ cooing voices introduce several of the tunes, whereupon the Tijuana Brass do their mostly unrelated Ameriachi thing familiar from past albums. Indeed, “Las Mananitas” seems to have been lifted from an obscure B-side of a 45 and overdubbed with the Rogers treatment. Jingling bells is a recurring song theme — first with “Jingle Bells,” then the cloying “The Bell That Couldn’t Jingle,” and ultimately “Jingle Bell Rock.” For the first time in a long time, Alpert’s sense of pacing occasionally goes awry; “My Favorite Things” nearly comes apart in the silences and piano/vocal interlude between the TJB grooves, and “Sleigh Ride” screeches to a dead halt. And yet time and further exposure has revealed this record’s homey charms, which no doubt is one reason why it continues to be available on CD where other TJB best-sellers have fallen by the wayside. ― Allmusic

Ray Sings, Basie Swings, huh? Hmm, well, yes and no. You see, the story goes something like this. In 2005, Concord Records exec John Burk, who produced Ray Charles’ superb late-career, Grammy-winning Genius Loves Company, found a reel of tape simply labeled “Ray/Basie.” Upon further analysis, it was determined that the 1973 recording featured Ray Charles backed by his own band — Count Basie and his band had actually recorded earlier that day. Charles’ vocal was exceptionally prominent in the mix and at first it was thought that this potentially momentous discovery would prove unable to bear fruit. But then Burk brainstormed and decided to bring the current Count Basie Orchestra — whose leader died in 1984 — into the studio to lay tracks behind Charles’ vocals. So there’s no Basie on Ray Sings, Basie Swings, but that’s merely a technicality, because there is some great music. Charles was in fine form vocally on this mix of remakes of his early ABC-Paramount-era hits and then-recent material. The consecutive reworkings of “Busted,” “Cryin’ Time,” and “I Can’t Stop Loving You,” three of his defining Top Ten hits of the early ’60s, are given brassy, bluesy treatments here, and standards ranging from Oscar Hammerstein II’s “Oh, What a Beautiful Morning” to the Beatles’ “The Long and Winding Road” are transformed in Charles’ hands. The set-closing “Georgia on My Mind,” as close to a signature song as Charles had, is given a tender, minimalist reading, but the track preceding it, “Look What They’ve Done to My Song, Ma,” picked up from the folk-pop singer Melanie, is quite possibly the album’s highlight. It’s appeared on other Ray Charles compilations before, but the gospelized, testifyin’ version featured here has got to be the liveliest take on that song anyone’s ever devised. So, yeah, there’s no Count Basie to be found here, but his namesake orchestra does him proud. For one of those postmortem studio patch jobs that owes as much to technology as talent, it’s a fine addition to the Ray Charles oeuvre, as long as one can get past the semi-false advertising of its title. ― Allmusic

White Trash Beautiful is Everlast’s third LP since he exited the House of Pain and took up the reigns of conscience-driven, streetwise roots rap. It’s been a long time coming. In music biz terms, 2000’s critically acclaimed Eat at Whitey’s was a dud next to Whitey Ford Sings the Blues’ multi-platinum success. That and the wacko record label commingling of the early 2000s found Everlast label-less and lonely. A survivor, he started recording in his home studio and gravitated to the dusky country of outlaws like Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings. Those sounds inform White Trash in spirit, if not necessarily in direct practice. For from the opening strains of the hard-luck story “Blinded by the Sun,” it’s clear that the former Erik Schrody’s been hearing not only country records but country grammar, too, as well as the organic rappalachia of Bubba Sparxxx. White Trash is a more effective mix of hip-hop trope and bluesy strum because, in the years since Whitey’s, what Everlast helped start has been finished by types like the above artists, Kid Rock, even OutKast. The relative novelty of hip-hop hitting up country and rock has worn away; Everlast can go ahead and kick that chip off his shoulder. Musically, Everlast and longtime producer Dante Ross still get a lot of mileage out of pairing his gruff delivery with spare acoustic guitar, and layering the whole thing over a subdued hip-hop bump (think “What’s It’s Like”). Everlast too still stumbles over the occasional rap cliché, like the street bravado/cynicism verses of “God Wanna” (“I’ll act like Ike Turner/Then treat you like Tina”), or “Sleepin’ Alone”‘s clunky relationship woe. The gritty “2 Pieces of Drama” is better, with its B Real guest shot and referencing of Cypress Hill’s “Hand on the Pump,” but White Trash is best when it’s blending country and blues into Everlast’s finely rendered tales of street-level loneliness. With its rain effects, slide guitar, and Hank Williams interpolation, “This Kind of Lonely” could be Nashville product with just a bit of tweaking, while the gentle pain of first single “Broken” is tinged with cello and theremin. “Lonely Road” opens up into the album’s most hopeful melody, led forth by surging fiddle and a quiet acoustic lead. “My back is strong,” he sings. “I’ll carry the load.” Even if he’s sad for a lot of it, Everlast also has some fun on White Trash Beautiful. “Sad Girl” sports a slight Latin flair in its chords as Everlast describes his latest infatuation. “Sittin’ in a pearl white Eldorado/In a gangsta lean she was revvin’ the throttle,” he relates. “She looked like Selena/The truth couldn’t be plaina.” Overall it’s a welcome return for Everlast — he sounds comfortable and confident, even in his heartbreak. ― Allmusic

It’s something of a mystery why Mute Records waited until early 2006 to release Goldfrapp’s third album, Supernature, in the U.S. After all, when it came out in the U.K. the previous summer, it made the duo into a bona fide chart success, to the point where the album’s terrific lead single, “Ooh La La” — on which Allison Goldfrapp channels Marc Bolan’s dippy-cool vocals and lyrics over a shuffling, glam-tastic beat — drew comparisons to former S Club 7 star Rachel Stevens’ similarly glam-inspired hit “Some Girls.” While Goldfrapp might balk at being called (or compared to) a pop act, it’s undeniable that the duo has streamlined and simplified its sound since the baroque Felt Mountain days. It’s also undeniable that Supernature is some of Goldfrapp’s most accessible work. Coming across like the missing link between Black Cherry’s sexy, sharp-edged dancefloor experiments and Felt Mountain’s luxe soundscapes, Supernature sometimes combines the best elements from those two albums into something great, and at other times renders them into something surprisingly bland. Along with the aforementioned “Ooh La La,” the upbeat tracks find Goldfrapp becoming the robo-glam-disco gods that Black Cherry suggested they might: the starkly catchy “Lovely 2 CU,” the fabulously blasé “Ride a White Horse,” and “Satin Chic,” which could single-handedly make honky tonk pianos fashionable again, all use the duo’s inherently theatrical style to very catchy, immediate ends. Interestingly, though, the sweeping ballads that used to be Goldfrapp’s forte are the most uneven tracks on Supernature. It’s not that tracks like “Time Out from the World” and “Koko” aren’t pretty and ethereal enough, but they’re just not that distinctive. Likewise, “Fly Me Away” is pleasant, but maybe a little too pleasant — it almost sounds like it was commissioned for a travel commercial. However, “Let It Take You” shows that Goldfrapp can still craft gorgeous, weightless ballads, and “Number 1” nails the laid-back sexiness that many of the other slower songs attempt. It’s surprisingly heartfelt, too — is there a sweeter compliment than “you’re my Saturday”? It would be unfair to say that Supernature’s stripped-down pop is a dumbed-down version of what Goldfrapp has accomplished in the past, since it takes a certain kind of smarts to hone songs into instantly catchy essences like the album’s best tracks. Year of the Cat brought Al Stewart a genuine worldwide smash with its title track, and for its successor, he did make a few concessions. These, however, were slight — just a slight increase of soft rock productions, an enhancement of the lushness that marked not only Year of the Cat but also Modern Times. These happened to be welcome adjustments to Stewart’s sound, since they increased the dreamy continental elegance at the core of his work. And that’s why Time Passages is the equal of Year of the Cat — it may be more streamlined, but the adjustments to his sound and the concessions to the mainstream just increase the soft grace of his eloquent historical pop epics. It’s possible to view this as too precious, because it is pitched at an audience who believes the common-day concerns of pop are piffle, but this is exceptionally well-crafted, from Stewart’s songs, where even three-minute songs seem like epics, to Alan Parsons’ cinematic arrangements and productions. This added concentration on the texture of the recording, ensuring that it was clean, spacious, and gentle, with a welcoming surface. Of course, this means that Time Passages can work very well as background music, but it also reveals much upon concentrated listening — enough to make it stand proudly next to Modern Times and Year of the Cat as one of Al Stewart’s very best albums. ― Allmusic
