These works have been well served on disc, from the classic Rostropovich/Richter to the recent Schiff/Fellner (both on Philips). This set certainly belongs among the great ones, and it offers sonics of breathtaking naturalness and realism. Pieter Wispelwey and Dejan Lazic work exceptionally well together. Two strong-willed artists, everything that they do serves the music, not least in the three sets of variations, which are chock-full of personality and clear delight in Beethoven’s early compositional virtuosity (the set based on Handel’s “See the conqu’ring hero comes” is especially impressive). In the two early sonatas, with their curiously structured slow-fast-fast form, Lazic and Wispelwey take care to differentiate the two successive quick movements in terms of both tempo and character so as to maximize each work’s scheme of contrasts.

In Op. 69 it’s wonderful to hear how much drama they bring to the long opening movement, with vivid dynamic contrasts that at the same time never compromise the music’s basic pulse. Listen to how sensitive Lazic is to the need to back off in the exposition’s triplet theme, so that the low notes of the cello don’t get buried. Or consider the duo’s magnificently moving realization of Beethoven’s “con molto sentimento d’affetto” designation in the adagio of Op. 102 No. 2. This is great playing by any standard, made all the more enticing by Channel Classics’ state-of-the-art sonics both in stereo or 5.0 multichannel surround formats. Discrete microphone placement never distorts the ideal balances that the players bring to their music making, but at the same time, particularly in SACD-surround, the performances have a vividness and three-dimensionality that sounds positively uncanny at times. A magnificent achievement on all fronts. ― ClassicsToday.com

In the pop music world of the 1950s and 1960s, when you scored a hit single, you used to put together an album featuring the hit as the title song, with the disc filled out by soundalike songs that, with any luck, might give you a follow-up hit. Apparently, the world of contemporary classical crossover isn’t much different. Sarah Brightman, who enjoyed a European hit with “Time to Say Goodbye,” her duet with Andrea Bocelli, constructed an album beginning with that recording and continuing in kind. The characteristics of the hit — a lush, melodramatic, mock-operatic arrangement complete with a crescendo out of Ravel’s “Bolero” and soaring voices singing in English and Italian — are repeated here, whether the material is drawn from Puccini, the Gipsy Kings, or Queen. The result is thus not as eclectic as you might at first suppose, and anyone suspecting that Brightman continues to find ways to restate her performances of Phantom of the Opera would not be far wrong. (Which is not to say that the formula doesn’t work, as this album enjoyed a healthy run at the top of the classical crossover charts.) ― Allmusic

Jethro Tull’s first LP-length epic is a masterpiece in the annals of progressive rock, and one of the few works of its kind that still holds up decades later. Mixing hard rock and English folk music with classical influences, set to stream-of-consciousness lyrics so dense with imagery that one might spend weeks pondering their meaning — assuming one feels the need to do so — the group created a dazzling tour de force, at once playful, profound, and challenging, without overwhelming the listener. The original LP was the best-sounding, best-engineered record Tull had ever released, easily capturing the shifting dynamics between the soft all-acoustic passages and the electric rock crescendos surrounding them. ― Allmusic

The debut album from the group, I felt like I stumbled upon something very special when finding this. All the elements here, jazz fusion, easy listening, and sophisti-pop, are all really well crafted.

In terms of audio fidelity, this is one of the best sounding albums I’ve ever heard too. Most albums sound just like what they are…recordings of performances. However, everything is so clear in the mix that I can sense all the subtle nuances from the instruments as if they were at a distance in the same room from me. ― rateyourmusic.com – Orion91

None of the Band’s previous work gave much of a clue about how they would sound when they released their first album in July 1968. As it was, Music from Big Pink came as a surprise. At first blush, the group seemed to affect the sound of a loose jam session, alternating emphasis on different instruments, while the lead and harmony vocals passed back and forth as if the singers were making up their blend on the spot. In retrospect, especially as the lyrics sank in, the arrangements seemed far more considered and crafted to support a group of songs that took family, faith, and rural life as their subjects and proceeded to imbue their values with uncertainty. Some songs took on the theme of declining institutions less clearly than others, but the points were made musically as much as lyrically. Tenor Richard Manuel’s haunting, lonely voice gave the album much of its frightening aspect, while Rick Danko’s and Levon Helm’s rough-hewn styles reinforced the songs’ rustic fervor. The dominant instrument was Garth Hudson’s often icy and majestic organ, while Robbie Robertson’s unusual guitar work further destabilized the sound. The result was an album that reflected the turmoil of the late ’60s in a way that emphasized the tragedy inherent in the conflicts. Music from Big Pink came off as a shockingly divergent musical statement only a year after the ornate productions of Sgt. Pepper, and initially attracted attention because of the three songs Bob Dylan had either written or co-written. However, as soon as “The Weight” became a minor singles chart entry, the album and the group made their own impact, influencing a movement toward roots styles and country elements in rock. Over time, Music from Big Pink came to be regarded as a watershed work in the history of rock, one that introduced new tones and approaches to the constantly evolving genre. ― Allmusic

A decent but short (nine songs) late ’60s set, with somewhat sparser production than he’d employ with the beefier arrangements of the “Thrill Is Gone” era. Brass and stinging guitar plays a part on all of the songs, leading off with the eight-minute title track, a spoken narrative about his famous guitar. ― Allmusic

Deluxe four CD + DVD edition features an additional 55 bonus tracks drawn from a stunning new 5. 1 surround sound and stereo mixes from the original multi-track tapes by award winning engineer Stephen W. Tayler, previously unreleased out-takes from the album sessions, a BBC Radio In Concert performance from October 1976, along with a bonus CD of a previously unreleased official bootleg of a performance at The Riviera Theater in Chicago in March 1976 recorded for FM Radio on Be Bop Deluxe’s first US tour which features a rare jam entitled Bill’s Blues. The set also includes visual material taken from a session for BBC TV’s Old Grey Whistle Test show broadcast in November 1976. Another highlight of this boxed set is the lavishly illustrated 68-page book with many previously unseen photographs and an essay of recollections by Bill Nelson. Additionally, the set includes postcards and a replica poster. Digitally remastered and expanded edition of Modern Music, the legendary 1976 album by Be Bop Deluxe. Recorded in June and July 1976 at Abbey Road Studio Three, Modern Music was the fourth album by Be Bop Deluxe and the second to feature the line-up of BIll Nelson (vocals, guitars, keyboards), Charles Tumahai (bass, vocals), Andy Clark (keyboards) and Simon Fox (drums). The album was co-produced by Bill Nelson and John Leckie. Much of the material appearing on the album was conceived by Bill Nelson whilst Be Bop Deluxe were undertaking their first tour of the USA in March 1976. The wonderful and expansive Modern Music “suite” which dominated the album was inspired by Bill’s experiences of America, the disillusionment with the US music business and a longing for home. Modern Music also featured other fine songs such as ‘Orphans of Babylon’, ‘Kiss of Light’, and the epic ‘Down on Terminal Street’. ― Amazon

Few songs are more instantly recognized – or more influential, infamous, and, yes, notorious – than Iron Butterfly’s “In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida.” The anchor of the mind-trip of an album of the same name, it occupies an entire side of an LP and runs for 17 minutes and five seconds, both bold moves in 1968 that changed how artists approached music in the studio and how listeners experienced it at home. The California-based group’s sophomore record also blew open the possibilities associated with psychedelia, heavy arrangements, and suggested meanings. And with apologies to those who might’ve heard it in a chemical haze in the late 1960s, In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida has never sounded more transformative than it does now. –Mofi.com

Mastered on Mobile Fidelity’s world-renowned mastering system and strictly limited to 2,500 copies, Mobile Fidelity’s hybrid SACD of From the Mars Hotel comes on as both an audiophile delight and Deadhead’s dream. Vastly improving upon the long-out-of-print 1984 MoFi version that currently commands upwards of hundreds of dollars on the aftermarket, the new version takes advantage of enhancements to the cutting system, pressing process, and mastering gear. MoFi’s engineers have taken every precaution in honing the sound and feel of the Dead classic. ― mofi.com

The Count Basie Orchestra was in top form for this set of Neal Hefti arrangements. Hefti had been one of the main architects of the new Basie sound of the ’50s and on this memorable date he utilizes the flute of Frank Wess prominently. “Cute” (heard here in its initial recording) became a standard. ― Allmusic

The Grateful Dead went into a state of latent activity in the fall of 1974 that lasted until the spring of the following year when the band reconvened at guitarist/vocalist Bob Weir’s Ace Studios to record Blues for Allah. The disc was likewise the third to be issued on their own Grateful Dead Records label. When the LP hit shelves in September of 1975, the Dead were still not back on the road — although they had played a few gigs throughout San Francisco. Obviously, the time off had done the band worlds of good, as Blues for Allah — more than any past or future studio album — captures the Dead at their most natural and inspired. The opening combo of “Help on the Way,” “Slipknot!,” and “Franklin’s Tower” is a multifaceted suite, owing as much to Miles Davis circa the E.S.P. album as to anything the Grateful Dead had been associated with. “Slipknot!” contains chord changes, progressions, and time signatures which become musical riddles for the band to solve — which they do in the form of “Franklin’s Tower.” Another highly evolved piece is the rarely performed “King Solomon’s Marbles,” an instrumental that spotlights, among other things, Keith Godchaux’s tastefully unrestrained Fender Rhodes finger work displaying more than just a tinge of Herbie Hancock inspiration. These more aggressive works contrast the delicate musical and lyrical haiku on “Crazy Fingers” containing some of lyricist Robert Hunter’s finest and most beautifully arranged verbal images for the band. Weir’s guitar solo in “Sage & Spirit” is based on one of his warm-up fingering exercises. Without a doubt, this is one of Weir’s finest moments. The light acoustic melody is tinged with an equally beautiful arrangement. While there is definite merit in Blues for Allah’s title suite, the subdued chant-like vocals and meandering melody seems incongruous when compared to the remainder of this thoroughly solid effort. ― Allmusic

This is a unique album containing live performances of many of Louis Armstrong’s most popular hits such as Mack the Knife, Blueberry Hill, C’est si Bon, La Vie en Rose, Give Me a Kiss to Build a Dream On and many more. Louis Armstrong was a man who liked to please the folks and he saw no compromise in pleasing them with his highly individualistic singing, and his incomparable trumpet playing. He was a natural entertainer, by gift and by inclination. This album is truly representative of the man, as it presents all facets of his talent. ― www.nativedsd.com

Heavenly is Johnny Mathis’ most successful regular album release, exceeded in his catalog only by the compilation Johnny’s Greatest Hits and the seasonal Merry Christmas collection. It’s not hard to understand why; this record is the epitome of Mathis’ approach to music. Standards like “More Than You Know” and “Moonlight Becomes You” are joined by show tunes like “Hello, Young Lovers” and “Stranger in Paradise” and a few more recent titles, such as the Burt Bacharach-composed title song and “That’s All.” The tempos are slow, the strings swell, and Mathis’ vulnerable tenor, dripping with tender emotion yet never missing a beat, soars and swoops over all. The best track, a revelation when it appeared on this album, is “Misty,” a treatment of Erroll Garner’s jazz piano classic with a newly added lyric by Johnny Burke. Few could have carried off that lyric (go ahead, try and think of another male singer of the ’50s who could handle it), but it was perfect for Mathis, and the track was spun off for a single that became his biggest hit in two years and remains one of his signature songs. Though still fairly early in his career, Mathis had done a lot of recording; Heavenly was actually his tenth album release in less than three years (counting two hits collections and the Christmas album). As a result, he was a recording veteran while still being fresh enough to give his performances real feeling. It all came together on Heavenly, Mathis’ longest running number one album which spent more than five-and-a-half years in the charts. ― Allmusic
