Singer/songwriter Jennifer Warnes celebrates her 50th anniversary as a recording artist with Another Time, Another Place, her first recording since 2001’s The Well. Since the 1990s, Warnes has worked only when she’s wanted to — a decade passed between The Well and its predecessor, The Hunter. In this century, she has lent her voice to recordings by Sonny Landreth, Chris Hillman, Leonard Cohen, and his son Adam Cohen. Warnes and longtime collaborator Roscoe Beck (Cohen’s bassist and music director and her own producer on Famous Blue Raincoat and The Hunter), began working in Austin and Los Angeles in 2015. But a string of profound losses — a niece, two sisters, a longtime manager, ex-boyfriend, her dog and Cohen — sidetracked the sessions several times.

Aside from or perhaps because of all that tragedy, Another Time, Another Place offers a stellar reflection of Warnes the interpretive singer. She co-wrote only one tune here, the lilting, Americana road song “The Boys and Me” with Michael Smotherman. The rest are covers that range from country to jazz to pop, all delivered with her sensual, expressive contralto. She opens with a completely revisioned version of Pearl Jam’s “Just Breathe.” Amid a weave of strings, upright bass, acoustic and electric guitars, and poignantly played B-3 and French horn, she offers the song’s melody with bittersweet knowledge and its projective lyric as if singing into a mirror for reassurance. A breezy and bluesy read of the jazz standard “Tomorrow Night” — cut by everyone from Lonnie Johnson to Bob Dylan to the Texas Hill Country’s own Johnny Nicholas — features Beck’s strolling upright bassline atop drums (Vinnie Colaiuta), percussion (Lenny Castro), and Jim Cox’s subtly swelling Hammond as she leans hard into the tune’s elegant swing. Mickey Newbury’s “So Sad” is delivered with warm, rounded edges as Greg Leisz’s pedal steel winds around the grain in her smoky vocal to underscore each moment of loneliness and pain in the wake of a lover’s departure, and those of friends who’ve shuffled off this mortal coil. Warnes convincingly weds jazz, cabaret, and musette in her version of “I See Your Face Before Me.” Landreth appears on resonator and electric slide guitar on a swampy yet altogether cinematic take on Ray Bonneville’s “I Am the Big Easy,” complete with a laid-back second-line rhythm. Two tracks later she offers “Back Where I Started,” another country-esque soul number by the Tedeschi-Trucks Band. The tension between emotional conviction and sweetness in its lyric is a perfect match for Warnes’ unflinching honesty and vulnerability. While Marcus Hummon’s “Freedom” wasn’t written for Warnes, it could have been. Backed by an all-star choir that numbers Ruthie Foster and Blondie Chaplin in its quintet, it relays the notion of freedom as both a state of abundance and an illustration of loss. As a result of these intimate performances, Another Time, Another Place is return to the world after a prolonged period of solitude and grief. Warnes offers these songs with the same aplomb, grace, discipline, passion, and dignity that she has displayed her entire career, and imbues these songs with new shades of meaning in the process. ― Allmusic

The Bee Gees had entered the early ’70s with a roaring success in the guise of “Lonely Days” and its accompanying album, which established their sound as a softer pop variant on the Moody Blues’ brand of progressive rock. Trafalgar, which followed, carried the process further on what was their longest single LP release, clocking in at 47 minutes. The music all sounded meaningful, much of it displaying the same kind of faux-grandeur that the Moody Blues affected on their music of this era, the core group (playing pretty hard) acompanied by either Mellotron-generated orchestra or the real thing, with the group’s soaring harmonies and Robin Gibb’s quavaring lead vocals all over the place. As with 2 Years On’s “Man for All Seasons,” there was also one title (“Lion in Winter,” featuring a startling falsetto performance) lifted from a recently popular film and play having to do with English history. It was all very beautifully produced and, propelled into record-store racks by the presence of “How Can You Mend a Broken Heart,” the group’s first No. 1 single, Trafalgar shipped very well initially. Nothing else on the record was remotely as memorable as the single, however, and its sales were limited. Trafalgar was also the handsomest and most elaborately designed of their albums, its cover reprinting Pocock’s painting “The Battle of Trafalgar” and the interior gatefold containing a shot of the brothers enacting the scene of the death of Lord Nelson. It all imparted the sense of a concept album, though nothing in the music said so, except perhaps the finale, “Walking Back to Waterloo.” Despite the hit single, the album showed the limits of the Bee Gees’ talents as songwriters and of their appeal as album artists. ― Allmusic

Barry Manilow’s debut album proves to be a far different animal than its glitzier successors; it’s fairly raw and unpolished, though his dramatic vocal style is already well established here. The material roams from impassioned balladeering (“I Am Your Child,” “One of These Days”) to chunky country (“Sweetwater Jones”), driving rock (“Oh My Lady”), and ’40s-style swing (“Cloudburst”) — and that’s just side one. “Could It Be Magic,” of course, is what pulled Manilow above the pack; it’s a textbook summary of the dramatic orchestration and swooning vocals that have long marked his style. Some deft arranging doesn’t hurt, either; the song glistens from an arrangement that keeps the backing band well in check, where other producers might have let them step all over it. The musical schizophrenia continues unchecked as the album progresses. Guitars surely never sounded so heavy again on as they did on “Flashy Lady,” whose trebly, high-end leads could almost be mistaken for Kiss’ own Ace Frehley. But just when you think you’ve got the artist pegged down, he comes back with the poppy R&B of “Friends” and the more familiar mid-tempo musings of “Sweet Life” — a promise, of sorts, that Manilow will adjust to the hand that fame dishes out. He had the confidence to pull it off; anyone opening his debut album with a minute-long spoken-word track that featured his grandfather was obviously not laboring under anybody else’s notions of hip. Judging by this unpolished outing, Manilow came across as having plenty to say, but without a clear roadmap of how he wanted to say it. Manilow and producer Ron Dante would clear up that problem on the next album, Barry Manilow II, but if you want a sense of where it began, here’s where you start.― Allmusic

Strictly limited to 7,500 numbered copies and pressed on MoFi SuperVinyl at RTI, Mobile Fidelity’s ultra-hi-fi UltraDisc One-Step 180g 45RPM 2LP collector’s edition presents Fragile with exacting sonics and unsurpassed visuals. Prized for decades for its brilliant textures, harmonics, dynamics, colors, and openness, the 1971 album now comes across with surreal transparency, multi-dimensional scope, and seemingly unlimited responsiveness. Such qualities transform the band’s recorded instruments into the equivalent of live guitars, basses, drums, and keyboards playing in your room. Critical aural traits – focus, pace, crispness, imaging, balance, depth, weight, scale – bring you face-to-face with the songs’ daredevil complexities and emerge in abundance. The distinctive tonal characteristics directly tied to Fragile – be it the inimitable bounce of Chris Squire’s groundbreaking bass, Anderson’s high-register singing, or drummer Bill Bruford’s padded snare – flourish. Such is the allure of UD1S and MoFi SuperVinyl. ― www.mofi.com

With 1970’s Workingman’s Dead, the Grateful Dead went through an overnight metamorphosis, turning abruptly from tripped-out free-form rock toward sublime acoustic folk and Americana. Taking notes on vocal harmonies from friends Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, the Dead used the softer statements of their fourth studio album as a subtle but moving reflection on the turmoil, heaviness, and hope America’s youth was facing as the idealistic ’60s ended. American Beauty was recorded just a few months after its predecessor, both expanding and improving on the bluegrass, folk, and psychedelic country explorations of Workingman’s Dead with some of the band’s most brilliant compositions. The songs here have a noticeably more relaxed and joyous feel. Having dived headfirst into this new sound with the previous album, the bandmembers found the summit of their collaborative powers here, with lyricist Robert Hunter penning some of his most poetic work, Jerry Garcia focusing more on gliding pedal steel than his regular electric lead guitar work, and standout lead vocal performances coming from Bob Weir (on the anthem to hippie love “Sugar Magnolia”), Ron “Pigpen” McKernan (on the husky blues of “Operator”), and Phil Lesh (on the near-perfect opening tune, “Box of Rain”). This album also marked the beginning of what would become a long musical friendship between Garcia and Dave Grisman, whose mandolin playing adds depth and flavor to tracks like the outlaw country-folk of “Friend of the Devil” and the gorgeously devotional “Ripple.” American Beauty eventually spawned the band’s highest charting single — “Truckin’,” the greasy blues-rock tribute to nomadic counterculture — but it also contained some of their most spiritual and open-hearted sentiments ever, their newfound love of intricate vocal arrangements finding pristine expression on the lamenting “Brokedown Palace” and the heavenly nostalgia and gratitude of “Attics of My Life.” While the Dead eventually amassed a following so devoted that following the band from city to city became the center of many people’s lives, the majority of the band’s magic came in the boundless heights it reached in its live sets but rarely managed to capture in the studio setting. American Beauty is a categorical exception to this, offering a look at the Dead transcending even their own exploratory heights and making some of their most powerful music by examining their most gentle and restrained impulses. It’s easily the masterwork of their studio output, and a strong contender for the best music the band ever made, even including the countless hours of live shows captured on tape in the decades that followed. ― Allmusic

Named the 6th best album in music history by Rolling Stone, Marvin Gaye’s staggeringly influential What’s Going On is pure soul genius and an ageless document about urban ills, employment issues, environmental concerns, and social responsibilities that’s as relevant today as it was upon release in 1971. At once, the singer both revolutionized Motown’s cache and upped the ante for his fellow artists. And now, the song cycle that toes the line between optimism, dismay, healing, futility, and urgency features sound and packaging that matches the groundbreaking arrangements, singing, and lyrical content within. ― www.mofi.com

Chet Baker’s penultimate session for Riverside — which was strictly instrumental — produced an all-star lineup to support him, including jazz heavyweights Pepper Adams, Bill Evans, and Kenny Burrell. Each of them makes important contributions to the session. Adams’ baritone sax solo on “Alone Together” is one of the album’s high points, while Herbie Mann and Bill Evans make their presence known on several cuts. Baker possessed one of the most melodious trumpets in jazz, compelling in its simplicity. Rarely extending his range above a single octave, he nonetheless had few peers when it came to slow, romantic ballads, which make up the playlist here. His characteristically soft approach is heard to good effect on “It Never Entered My Mind,” where he works with the guitar of Kenny Burrell. Burrell and Baker also collaborate on a moving rendition of “September Song.” Chet is a good place to hear Baker’s special way with the horn, and is made even more attractive with the presence and contributions of top jazz artists. ― Allmusic

After experimenting with synthesizers and a pop sound on his solo debut, Don Henley hits the mark on his sophomore release, Building the Perfect Beast. This album established Henley as an artist in his own right after many successful years with the Eagles, as it spawned numerous hits. While the songs seem crafted for pop radio, it’s hard to fault him for choosing arrangements that would get his messages to the masses. Unlike most pop in the 1980s, however, Henley had deep intellectual themes layered beneath the synthesizer sounds and crisp production. In the opening song “Boys of Summer,” he talks about trying to recapture the past while knowing that things will never be the same. Henley has a gift for writing about the heart and soul of America and for mixing his love for the country and small-town life (“Sunset Grill”) with cynicism about government (“All She Wants to Do Is Dance”) and modernization (“Month of Sundays”). Although the politics and the sound of the album make the decade of release easy to place, Henley’s earnest delivery and universal messages give many of the tracks a timeless feel, which is no small feat. This is Henley’s most consistent album, and it is the place to start for those wanting to sample his solo work. ― Allmusic

Axis: Bold as Love is the second studio album by the Jimi Hendrix Experience. Track Records first released it in the United Kingdom in December 1967, only seven months after the release of their highly successful debut, Are You Experienced. In the United States, Reprise Records delayed the release until the following month. The album reached the top ten in the album charts in both countries.

For the album, the group displayed several musical styles and critics saw it as demonstrating Jimi Hendrix’s growth as a songwriter. The album introduced “Spanish Castle Magic” and “Little Wing”, two Hendrix compositions which draw on his roots performing with rhythm and blues bands, that would remain in his live repertoire throughout his career.

As the lead singer of the Doobie Brothers from 1975-1980, Michael McDonald’s soulful voice and skilled writing gave the group classics like “Minute by Minute,” “Real Love,” and the perfect “What a Fool Believes.” After the group’s 1980 album One Step Closer displayed a tension that was almost audible, it was no surprise that a split was in the works. 1982’s If That’s What It Takes is McDonald’s first solo effort, and was recorded at the great recording studios like Warner Bros. and Sunset Sound and was co-produced by Ted Templeman and Lenny Waronker. The album’s biggest hit, the moody and sleek “I Keep Forgettin’,” continues McDonald’s unflinching look at heartbreak, and it is more R&B-influenced than the previous Doobie Brothers work. The buoyant “I Gotta Try,” co-written by Kenny Loggins, perfectly captures the early-’80s L.A. pop sound. While McDonald’s pop acumen is no surprise, If That’s What It Takes also offers McDonald the chance to do ballads. The poignant and spare “I Can Let Go Now” has some of his best lyrics. “Losin End,” which first appeared on 1976’s Takin’ It to the Streets, gets recast as an even bleaker rumination with a suitably sorrowful solo from Tom Scott. The melodically complex “Believe in It” has McDonald doing some great, offhanded gospel-tinged vocals. This debut juggles tracks of merit and those of less distinction, but the bright spots make this essential. ― Allmusic

The Grateful Dead made their reputation on the road with their live shows, and they always struggled to capture that magic in the studio. From the Mars Hotel, while not a classic, represents one of their better studio albums. Jerry Garcia sounds engaged throughout and takes the vocal reigns for most of the songs on the album — although he’s not the most gifted vocalist, he proves himself able and versatile. He sings the rollicking opener, “U.S. Blues,” with a tongue-in-cheek seriousness that gives the political song an edge, and he lends emotional sincerity to the atmospheric ballad “China Doll.” Garcia shines on guitar during the funk workout “Scarlet Begonias,” but the ensemble work is best displayed on the album’s centerpiece, “Unbroken Chain.” During this song, all the musicians are allowed to shine: Phil Lesh, the bassist and songwriter, provides tender vocals over a piano-based arrangement while the bridge allows the guitars and drums to stretch out in classic Grateful Dead style. This album is highly recommended ― Allmusic

In 1987, John Hiatt, clean and sober and looking for an American record deal, was asked by an A&R man at a British label to name his dream band. After a little thought, Hiatt replied that if he had his druthers, he’d cut a record with Ry Cooder on guitar, Nick Lowe on bass, and Jim Keltner on drums. To Hiatt’s surprise, he discovered all three were willing to work on his next album; Hiatt and his dream band went into an L.A. studio and knocked off Bring the Family in a mere four days, and the result was the best album of Hiatt’s career. The musicians certainly make a difference here, generating a lean, smoky groove that’s soulful and satisfying (Ry Cooder’s guitar work is especially impressive, leaving no doubt of his singular gifts without ever overstepping its boundaries), but the real triumph here is Hiatt’s songwriting. Bring the Family was recorded after a period of great personal turmoil for him, and for the most part the archly witty phrasemaker of his earlier albums was replaced by an wiser and more cautious writer who had a great deal to say about where life and love can take you. Hiatt had never written anything as nakedly confessional as “Tip of My Tongue” or “Learning How to Love You” before, and even straight-ahead R&B-style rockers like “Memphis in the Meantime” and “Thing Called Love” possessed a weight and resonance he never managed before. But Bring the Family isn’t an album about tragedy, it’s about responsibility and belatedly growing up, and it’s appropriate that it was a band of seasoned veterans with their own stories to tell about life who helped Hiatt bring it across; it’s a rich and satisfying slice of grown-up rock & roll. ― Allmusic

With the 1974 disintegration of the original Alice Cooper group, Alice was free to launch a solo career. He wisely decided to re-enlist the services of Bob Ezrin for his solo debut, Welcome to My Nightmare, which was a concept album tied into the story line of the highly theatrical concert tour he launched soon after the album’s release. While the music lost most of the gritty edge of the original AC lineup, Welcome to My Nightmare remains Alice’s best solo effort — while some tracks stray from his expected hard rock direction, there’s plenty of fist-pumping rock to go around. The disco-flavored, album-opening title track would be reworked on the stage as more of a hard rock tune, while “Some Folks” dips into cabaret territory, and “Only Women Bleed” is a sensitive ballad that became a Top Ten hit. But the rockers serve as the album’s foundation — “Devil’s Food,” “The Black Widow,” “Department of Youth,” and “Cold Ethyl” are all standouts, as is the more tranquil yet eerie epic “Steven.” Despite this promising start to Cooper’s solo career, the majority of his subsequent releases were often not as focused and were of varying quality. ― Allmusic
