The success of Lena Horne: The Lady and Her Music, which opened at the Nederlander Theater on Broadway on May 12, 1981, and ran 333 performances, until June 30, 1982 (Horne’s 65th birthday) was a cumulative one. Horne had been performing in nightclubs, theaters, and casinos for 40 years, singing many of the same songs she sang at the Nederlander, but somehow the Broadway context and her perseverance combined to make this more than a glorified club act. Horne had the benefit of being an artist who had faced adversity (particularly, the vicissitudes of being an African-American star in Hollywood in the 1940s) and, if not triumphed, at least persisted, so that, as she reached her golden age, her struggles within the entertainment business could be seen as heroic. And, she was still at it, which made her, in the nomenclature of the time, a “survivor.” That earned her gales of applause from theatergoers who had made the journey with her and from new fans who were too young to remember her and were discovering her anew. The show made some attempt to at least trace the outlines of Horne’s career from being a Cotton Club chorus girl in the 1930s to a movie star in the ’40s. After a clutch of initial songs, an announcer made a Cotton Club announcement, and there was a short dramatic scene featuring several other performers who gave Horne a breather by doing a few numbers. Otherwise, she periodically interrupted the run of songs for personal reminiscences about her career as introductions to songs with which she was associated from her movie and previous Broadway musical appearances. The bulk of the show, however, was given over to her typically moving interpretations of classic songs by Cole Porter, Rodgers & Hart, Harold Arlen, and others. Among the new material, there was an emphasis on songs about endurance and self-reliance, in keeping with the overall theme, notably the Jim Croce hit “I Got a Name” and Paul Williams’ “Life Goes On,” both of which were turned into showstoppers. But then, the show was one showstopper after another, and a fitting capper to a great career. ― Allmusic

Kenny Rogers took a bit of a chance in releasing this loosly based concept album at the time, but boy, did it pay off! Sales for the album went through the roof, as the title track and “She Believes In Me” became pop crossover hits, with the latter reaching the pop Top 10. Later, “The Gambler” was turned into a string of made-for-television movies. ― Allmusic

Released 40 years after Orson Welles’ infamous radio version of the H.G. Wells tale, Jeff Wayne’s musical version of War of the Worlds straddles old-style radio drama and contemporary orchestrated narratives by Rick Wakeman and David Bedford. And while it lacks the sophisticated arrangements of, say, Journey to the Centre of the Earth, it does boast an impressively odd cast — this may be the only time that a member of Thin Lizzy worked with Richard Burton, and the presence of Julie Covington and the Moody Blues’ Justin Hayward in very attractive singing roles attest to its pop/rock aspirations. It’s Burton’s sonorous tones that sustain this work; his frequent solo narrations are eminently listenable, whereas sections featuring dialogue with other characters often come off as a bit stilted. The music is competent studio rock, and “Horsell Common and the Heat Ray” does strike just the right balance between Burton’s narration and an accompaniment built around a buzzsaw guitar riff. Overall, it’s pleasant as a period piece, and still a fine way to introduce younger listeners to Wells’ classic tale. (And if you can find it in a vinyl, it comes with a nicely produced narrative booklet with gloriously lurid illustrations by Geoff Taylor.) The album was actually appealing on too many fronts for its own good in many ways — the Justin Hayward-sung ballad “Forever Autumn,” extracted from a much longer piece on the double-LP — showed some signs of appealing to AM radio listeners and climbed to the Top 40 based on airplay alone, but by the time Columbia Records in America (missing this boat entirely) got copies of the single into stores so that people could actually buy the record, the song had dropped back down; in the meantime, the record became a favorite of discos and dance clubs in New York and elsewhere, where its extended, highly rhythmic, synthesizer-driven sections delighted deejays and audiences, and Columbia missed another bet by not releasing an instrumental-only assembly of those long passages. (In New York, for years after it went out of print on vinyl, the album was sought after by club deejays eager to spin it). ― Allmusic

Stray Cats are no strangers to reunions. They had their first in 1986, when they only had been separated for a few years, and then another one a few years later, finally calling it a day after Choo Choo Hot Fish, a Dave Edmunds production that made few waves in 1992. Released 27 years after that quiet farewell, 40 finds these former young guns staring down their sixties by staying true to the music that was old-fashioned when they took it up the charts in 1981. Back then, their retro rockabilly moves stood as a nervy rebuke to the stylized synth pop and new wave burning up the underground, but the only way 40 could be seen as a disruption is to the stable lives Brian Setzer, Slim Jim Phantom, and Lee Rocker cultivated in the nearly three decades since their last record. Saving the occasional horndog lyric from Setzer, at no time does the trio attempt to sound younger than their years, which is naturally to their benefit. Comfortable in their skin and still intoxicated by a big rockabilly beat, the Stray Cats sound vigorous and sly — a bit louder and heavier, possibly slightly slower, than before, but also unconcerned with the kind of modern fashion that tainted their records after Rant N Rave. What makes 40 work is the same thing that made Built for Speed click: the trio has absorbed all the nuances of rockabilly, so they can enliven it with their own swing and sense of humor. It’s this bold personality that keeps 40 cooking. Stray Cats spit out allusions to their idols and classic oldies, nod at surf rock and country mythos, play a few blues shuffles, and generally have a whale of a good time. It’s notable that these high spirits are evident on a reunion album because they were largely absent on the trio’s previous reunions: this time, it sounds like the group is in it for fun, and that makes a huge difference. ― Allmusic

Poor Nick Drake. The soft-spoken introvert may have spent his days upon this earth as a struggling singer/songwriter, but since leaving, his atmospheric and distinctly melancholy songs have become a pop culture fixture. Rescued from British folk oblivion by a one-off Volkswagen commercial, his name has since been bandied about by critics looking to link the English bard with every winsome, dough-faced up-and-comer who puts out a record with strings on it. What’s on a Nick Drake compilation is never as interesting as what was left off. The insistence of compilers to show the “whole” scope of Drake’s sound is a bit laughable, as his four records — despite the sparse arrangements on Pink Moon and 1986’s demo collection Time of No Reply — are essentially the same. On the SACD Treasury, his third “best-of” (not counting the Fruit Tree box), listeners get the usual suspects: “Hazey Jane II,” “River Man,” and “Way to Blue”; stereo remixes of “Black Eyed Dog,” “Road,” and “From the Morning”; and the posthumously released U.K. “hit” single “Magic,” a flatly sung composition that Robert Kirby’s spooky new string arrangement can’t rescue from mediocrity. This leaves no room for essential Drake offerings like “Fly” or “Time of No Reply,” resulting in a mix that, while still classic, suffers from the very knowledge of the aforementioned tracks’ existence. Newcomers, if there are any by now, would be better off picking up 1994’s Way to Blue: An Introduction to Nick Drake, a far more comprehensive look at an artist who continues to enchant and inspire, despite his somber demeanor and bitterly contested end. ― Allmusic

They’re his songs, so he can do whatever he wants with them. That seems to be the idea behind My Songs, a 2019 collection where Sting decides to revisit 15 of his most famous songs and tweak them for modern audiences. The inspiration behind the project was an updated version of “Brand New Day,” which he reworked at the end of 2018 not only so it’d have a shiny new arrangement for a New Year’s Eve gig, but so the track could slide between Ariana Grande hits on a playlist. Happy with the results, he turned his attention to Sting and Police songs you know by heart, re-recording a few chestnuts outright, but usually satisfying his muse by stripping away old studio effects, swapping out lead vocals, and adding instruments and vocal harmonies along with numerous other minute but discernable changes. Apart from perhaps “Demolition Man,” which is now awash with Hendrixian waves of guitar, none of the songs are turned inside-out: not only does the overall feel remain the same, but so do the basic arrangements. That doesn’t mean the alterations on My Songs are unnoticeable; far from it, in fact. Sting’s heavy hand is evident throughout My Songs. When he revisits the Police, it’s hard to ignore how the contributions of Andy Summers and Stewart Copeland are either absent or muted, just like how it’s impossible not to notice that the new vocals sound scraggly and weathered, not spry. Whether it’s the early “If You Love Somebody Set Them Free,” “If I Ever Lose My Faith in You,” or the relatively recent “Brand New Day,” the solo hits are awash with funk guitars and electronic rhythms suitable for an upscale mall. Of the two approaches, the latter could conceivably be called modern, but it can’t be called fresh, which highlights the mystery at the core of My Songs. Despite the sometimes-jarring changes, the versions on My Songs still sound like the old tunes, raising the question of why Sting even bothered with this project. ― Allmusic

Ever since the Smiths cut Twinkle’s 1965 obscurity “Golden Lights” in 1986, Morrissey has exhibited a knack for curious covers. Usually, he saved other people’s songs for the stage, sometimes sneaking a tune onto a B-side, but he never dedicated himself to covering his favorite tunes until 2019’s California Son. The punning title indicates Morrissey’s keen awareness of 20th century pop culture, but instead of celebrating the surf rock of the Rivieras, Moz is stuck in Topanga Canyon and Hollywood. Opening with an interpretation of Jobriath’s “Morning Starship” is something of a feint, suggesting California Son will be populated with the kind of glam cult favorites the singer has championed for decades, but nearly all of the record is devoted to the kind of pop and folk-rock songs that were recorded often in the second half of the ’60s and early ’70s. Balancing AM chestnuts from Roy Orbison (“It’s Over”), the 5th Dimension (“Wedding Bell Blues”), and Gary Puckett & the Union Gap (“Lady Willpower”) — the kind of tunes that still keep oldies radio humming along all these years later — with pointed songs from Bob Dylan (“Only a Pawn in Their Game”), Joni Mitchell (“Don’t Interrupt the Sorrow”), Phil Ochs (“Days of Decision”), and Buffy Sainte-Marie (“Suffer the Little Children”), Morrissey manages to confound without quite surprising. Perhaps the protest songs are intended as commentary on modern times — if so, it’s difficult to square these choices with the controversial political stances Morrissey has embraced in public — but it’s just as likely he chose these compositions because he likes their melodies and words, knowing that he can milk the melodrama out of each turn of phrase. He does that throughout California Son, sounding fully engaged in a way he hasn’t in his often listless 2010s. Working with a restricted colorful palette helps, too. Perhaps it’s disarming to hear chintzy synths on “Loneliness Remembers What Happiness Forgets,” but shorn of the loud, lumbering guitars that have defined his records since 2004’s You Are the Quarry, Morrissey seems lithe, even spry. That’s not quite the same thing as sounding young, however. By planting his flag so firmly in the past, Morrissey proudly separates himself from the present, even when he’s embracing brightly digital production. In other words, he’s sounding a bit like a curmudgeon, but he embraces his eccentricities, which means this contrarianism wears well on record, even if it doesn’t in real life. ― Allmusic

B.B. King was 77 years old when Reflections was released, which perhaps entitled him to reflect back on the song standards the album contained. Despite advancing age, King had already been unusually busy on the recording front for a septuagenarian, turning out the gold-selling duets album Deuces Wild in 1997, Blues on the Bayou in 1998, Let the Good Times Roll: The Music of Louis Jordan in 1999, the double-platinum Riding With the King with Eric Clapton and Makin’ Love Is Good for You in 2000, and the seasonal recording A Christmas Celebration of Hope in 2002. For Reflections, he again worked with Simon Climie, who produced Riding With the King, and collaborated with a session band including such notables as Joe Sample, Nathan East, and Doyle Bramhall II. The songs ranged from pop evergreens like “I’ll String Along With You” and “For Sentimental Reasons” to blues favorites such as Lonnie Johnson’s “Tomorrow Night,” with oddities like “Always on My Mind” thrown in and even a couple of remakes of the earlier King songs “Word of Honor” and “Neighborhood Affair.” The arrangements, which included horn and string parts, left room for King’s distinctive blues guitar work, but really supported his always expressive voice. The result was a confident, easygoing album that stylistically could have been made in 1953 as easily as 2003. Blues purists and aficionados of blues guitar would find it only partially satisfying, but it reflected the breadth of musical taste of an artist who always played the blues but never restricted himself only to blues music or blues fans. ― Allmusic

This album was unusual on several counts. For starters, it was a soundtrack (for Sam Peckinpah’s movie of the same title), a first venture of its kind for Bob Dylan. For another, it was Dylan’s first new LP in three years — he hadn’t been heard from in any form other than the single “George Jackson,” his appearance at the Bangladesh benefit concert in 1971, in all of that time. Finally, it came out at an odd moment of juxtaposition in pop culture history, appearing in July 1973 on the same date as the release of Paul McCartney’s own first prominent venture into film music, on the Live and Let Die soundtrack (the Beatles bassist had previously scored The Family Way, a British project overlooked amid the frenzy of the Beatles’ success). Interestingly, each effort reunited the artist with a significant musician/collaborator from his respective past: McCartney with producer George Martin and Dylan with guitarist Bruce Langhorne, who’d played with him on his early albums up to Bringing It All Back Home, before being supplanted by Mike Bloomfield, et al. But that was where the similarities between the two projects ended — apart from the title song, Live and Let Die was Martin’s project rather than McCartney’s, whereas Dylan was all over Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid as a composer, musician, etc. Additionally, whereas McCartney’s work was a piece of pure pop-oriented rock in connection with a crowd-pleasing action-fantasy film, Dylan’s work comprised an entire LP, and the resulting album was a beautifully simple, sometimes rough-at-the-edges and sometimes gently refined piece of country- and folk-influenced rock, devised to underscore a very serious historical film by one of the movies’ great directorial stylists. It was also as strong as any of his recent albums, featuring not just Langhorne but also such luminaries as Booker T. Jones, Roger McGuinn, and Byron Berline. “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door” was the obvious hit off the album, and helped drive the sales, but “Billy 1,” “Billy 4,” and “Billy 7” were good songs, too — had any of them shown up on bootlegs, they’d have kept the Dylan semiologists and hagiographers busy for years working over them. The instrumentals surrounding them were also worth hearing as manifestations of Dylan’s music-making; “Bunkhouse Theme” was downright gorgeous. It was the first time since New Morning, in 1970, that Dylan had released more than five minutes of new music at once, and it was a gift to fans as well as to Peckinpah — little did anyone realize at the time that it heralded a period of new recording and a national tour (with the Band), along with a brief label switch, and Dylan’s greatest period of sustained musical visibility since 1966. This record also proved that Dylan could shoehorn his music within the requirements of a movie score without compromising its content or quality, something that only the Beatles, unique among rock artists, had really managed to do up to that time, and that was in their own movie, A Hard Day’s Night. “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door” may have been the biggest hit to come out of a Western in at least 21 years, since Dimitri Tiomkin and Ned Washington had given “High Noon” to Tex Ritter to sing in Fred Zinnemann’s High Noon in 1952 (and Katy Jurado was in both movies), and he’d also outdone Ritter on two counts, writing the music — a full score, to boot — and getting a cameo appearance in the film. The album was later kind of overlooked and neglected in the wake of the tour that followed and the imposing musical attributes of, say, Blood on the Tracks and Desire, but heard on its own terms it holds up 30-plus years later. ― Allmusic

Michael McDonald never disguises what his seventh solo album is: the title Motown makes it clear that this 2003 effort is a tribute to the glory days of Berry Gordy’s Detroit empire. McDonald never strays too far from that thesis, occasionally dipping into the late ’70s for material (he takes on Marvin Gaye’s “I Want You”) and sometimes choosing to wax relatively obscure items from Motown’s vast, rich catalog, but for the most part, this is devoted to the songs that you know by heart, whether you were a kid in the ’60s or raised on oldies radio. Since this is McDonald, not a neo-soul neophyte , this is cleanly and sharply produced, relying heavily on synthesizers, drum machines, and professional vocalists, but anybody who has spent any time with his solo records will find this not to be objectionable, but par for the course. If McDonald doesn’t reinvent these songs — hell, he uses the original arrangements as a blueprint, then cleans them up — he does display a love and reverence for the work, and his singing is passionate throughout. Ultimately, Motown doesn’t add much to his discography, but for those who love McDonald and Motown in equal measures, it’s a fine listen. ― Allmusic

Michael McDonald’s 2003 album of Motown covers, modestly titled Motown, was his biggest hit in well over a decade, so it only made sense that he returned with a sequel to the record a little over a year later — after all, might as well strike while the iron is hot. Logically titled Motown Two, the album follows the same blueprint as the first record, offering highly polished, professionally produced, expertly performed interpretations of gems from the Motown vaults; it’s the sound of young America in the ’60s reinterpreted for the adults of the new millennium. While the sound is the same, there are a couple of important differences this time around. First of all, there are a few celebrity cameos, a sign that this project has a higher profile than the first Motown record. These cameos — Billy Preston on “You’re All I Need to Get By,” Stevie Wonder playing harmonica on his own “I Was Made to Love Her,” a duet with Toni Braxton, “Stop, Look, Listen (To Your Heart)” — all fit seamlessly into the album, and actually enrich the album, giving it warm, open-hearted feel, which is also reflected in a looser performance from McDonald himself. Last time, he was in typically fine voice, but here he really digs into the songs, making this a better listen in terms of sheer performance, but what really distinguishes this album — and what makes it different from its predecessor — is that there’s a slightly adventurous streak in the choice of songs. There are big hits here, to be sure — “Reach Out, I’ll Be There,” “Baby I Need Your Lovin’,” “Tracks of My Tears,” “What’s Goin’ On,” “Nowhere to Run” — but McDonald has also dug out some lesser-known tunes like “Tuesday Heartbreak,” “After the Dance,” and “Baby I’m for Real” that make this album a richer, more enjoyable listen than before. It’s the rare sequel that improves on the original. ― Allmusic

The “other” O’Jays album masterpiece, Ship Ahoy combined shattering message tracks and stunning love songs in a fashion matched only by Curtis Mayfield’s finest material. From the album cover showing a slave ship to the memorable title song and incredible “For the Love of Money,” Gamble and Huff addressed every social ill from envy to racism and greed. Eddie Levert’s leads were consistently magnificent, as were the harmonies, production and arrangements. “Put Your Hands Together” and “You Got Your Hooks In Me” would be good album cuts, but on Ship Ahoy they were merely icing on the cake. ― Allmusic

Public Pressure is Yellow Magic Orchestra’s first live album, released on February 21, 1980. It was their second number-one album in Japan, setting a record of 250,000 copies sold within two weeks of release. It was recorded during three dates of the group’s first tour of Europe and the US. The group toured as a six-piece, but guitarist Kazumi Watanabe was mixed-out and replaced with more keyboards due to contractual matters between record labels. Un-dubbed recordings from this tour were later released on the album Faker Holic. Most of Yukihiro Takahashi’s vocals were also replaced with those re-recorded afterward in studio. These were not restored on Faker Holic.

Xoo Multiplies is a bizarre album filled with singalong pop songs, a few interludes including commercial jingles and ad-men pitches, and no less than two versions of the Drells’ chestnut “Tighten Up.” There are a few solid electronic tunes (“Nice Age,” “Citizens of Science”) amid the chaos, plus instrumental versions of “Chaos Panic” and “Lotus Love” added to the CD issue. ― Allmusic

The great thing about this early live record is its obscurity — not just that this isn’t one of his better-known records, but that the set list is a fanboy’s dream, heavy on album tracks, covers, and the kinds of song that make Elton John’s early work so individual. It’s not just that there are no hits here, but it’s that these six songs emphasize the spare, hard-rocking bluesy singer/songwriter that may not have written his own words, but always sang them with conviction and melodies that made them seem like his own. This may be a minor effort in his catalog, but that’s part of its pleasure — it’s certainly a record from the time before Elton the superstar, as he tears through Tumbleweed Connection tracks prior to the record’s release, does a phenomenal reworking of “Honky Tonk Women,” hauls out B-sides like “Bad Side of the Moon,” and gives a fierce, infectious performance. It’s not essential for anyone but obsessives, but if you want any indication of what Elton sounded like prior to his big break, this is an excellent, even intoxicating, summary. ― Allmusic
