Along with being a multi-talented musician and an excellent songwriter, Phil Collins is one of the best live performers in rock. His songs usually stay true to their original form, he puts plenty of fire into his vocals, and best of all, every one of his in-concert qualities transfers well into album form. Serious Hits…Live! is a wonderful example of this, with not only 15 tracks, but 15 of Phil’s best tracks, performed with an overcharged amount of enthusiasm and energy. There’s an equal number of ballads and fast songs on the album, but even on the slow stuff, Collins puts a lot of passion and feeling into the lyrics. Efforts such as “One More Night,” “Do You Remember?,” and especially his best ballad, “Against All Odds (Take a Look at Me Now)” are heartfelt and unhindered. His moods shift easily without any false emotional dramatics, which in turn enhances the ambience of the songs. The tracks are taken from a number of shows during his Serious Tour in 1990, but his performance level remains enthusiastic the whole album through and the change of venues goes unnoticed, which is again another plus. Collins is just as sharp on the quicker tunes, with some wonderful percussion filling in behind him. The drumming is stellar on “Easy Lover” and again on “Sussudio,” but the album’s only downfall is its lack of credits, leaving the identities of the musicians a mystery. The album makes up for this with a spine-chilling version of “In the Air Tonight” as Collins does a good job of capturing the song’s haunting air, and from here the album switches gears with “You Can’t Hurry Love” but doing so with undefiled perfection. Almost all of the songs here broke Billboard’s Top Ten, and five of these tracks hit number one, which makes Serious Hits…Live! truly live up to it’s name. ― Allmusic

The choice of Curtis Mayfield to score the blaxploitation film Super Fly was an inspired one. No other artist in popular music knew so well, and expressed through his music so naturally, the shades of gray inherent in contemporary inner-city life. His debut solo album, 1970’s Curtis, had shown in vivid colors that the ’60s optimist (author of the civil-rights anthems “Keep On Pushing” and “People Get Ready”) had added a layer of subtlety to his material; appearing on the same LP as the positive and issue-oriented “Move On Up” was an apocalyptic piece of brimstone funk titled “(Don’t Worry) If There’s a Hell Below , We’re All Going to Go.” For Super Fly, Mayfield wisely avoids celebrating the wheeling-and-dealing themes present in the movie, or exploiting them, instead using each song to focus on a different aspect of what he saw as a plague on America’s streets. He also steers away from explicit moralizing; through his songs, Mayfield simply tells it like it is (for the characters in the film as in real life), with any lessons learned the result of his vibrant storytelling and knack of getting inside the heads of the characters. “Freddie’s Dead,” one of the album’s signature pieces, tells the story of one of the film’s main casualties, a good-hearted yet weak-willed man caught up in the life of a pusher, and devastatingly portrays the indifference of those who witness or hear about it. “Pusherman” masterfully uses the metaphor of drug dealer as businessman, with the drug game, by extension, just another way to make a living in a tough situation, while the title track equates hustling with gambling (“The game he plays he plays for keeps/hustlin’ times and ghetto streets/tryin’ ta get over”). Ironically, the sound of Super Fly positively overwhelmed its lyrical finesse. A melange of deep, dark grooves, trademarked wah-wah guitar, and stinging brass, Super Fly ignited an entire genre of music, the blaxploitation soundtrack, and influenced everyone from soul singers to television-music composers for decades to come. It stands alongside Saturday Night Fever and Never Mind the Bollocks Here’s the Sex Pistols as one of the most vivid touchstones of ’70s pop music. ― Allmusic

Since its early beginnings in 1953, RCA’s Living Stereo sound has remained one of the most satisfying sound reproduction techniques, capturing the lush timbres and fiery characters of some of America’s greatest orchestras and conductors. Now being re-released on SACD, these masterful recordings are finally able to be heard as they were recorded — on multiple channels. This particular album features the music of Spanish composers de Falla, Albéniz, and Granados with the Chicago Symphony under Fritz Reiner. The orchestra brilliantly captures the sultry, sassy flair of El amor brujo. Together with soprano Leontyne Price — whose penetrating, throaty sound is ideally suited for this work — Reiner and the CSO deliver a performance that draws listeners in from the beginning and leaves them wanting more by the end. Regrettably, the liner notes do not provide listeners with a text/translation, but such information is available on the Internet for those interested. The music of Albéniz and Granados, while performed with just as much fervor, is given a less comprehensive treatment than de Falla. Three brief movements from Albéniz’s Iberia and one movement from Goyescas of Granados make it regrettable that this is not a two- or even three-disc set. Still, this album is sure to please and is deserving of a home in virtually any collection. ― Allmusic

Solace is at once comforting, mysterious, expansive, timeless, and familiar. The sophomore jinx was certainly eluded here, as McLachlan sets forth a superior collection of songs and performances with the help of longtime producer Pierre Marchand. The opening track, “Drawn to the Rhythm,” serves its title well and does the job of luring you in. Intelligent, intriguing lyrics and lilting melodies abound, whether amidst the pulsing rhythms of “Into the Fire” and “Back Door Man” or the quietly profound stories of “Home” and “Shelter.” Although pretty much all of the tunes will grab you at one point or another, “The Path of Thorns (Terms)” and “I Will Not Forget You” are especially memorable, the latter not to be confused with McLachlan’s “I Will Remember You,” which appears on the 1995 soundtrack for The Brothers McMullen. Solace is a wonderful record that offers a glimpse of the astounding talent of a young Sarah McLachlan. ― Allmusic

Greta Van Fleet hail from Frankenmuth, Michigan, home of Bronner’s CHRISTmas Wonderland, the store that keeps the holiday spirit alive nearly every day of the year. Living with the specter of Santa is bound to keep a young man residing in a fantasy land, and so it is with Greta Van Fleet: They inhabit a world they never experienced, namely the ’70s. Every member of Greta Van Fleet — which consists of a heap of brothers called Kiszka and a drummer named Danny Wagner, all born too late to witness either Kingdom Come or Jimmy Page & Robert Plant’s Unledded reunion — act as if the earth stopped turning in 1974, the year when Led Zeppelin still traded in myths learned from J.R.R. Tolkien and strode the earth like golden gods. Try as they may — and, lordy, do they try — Greta Van Fleet never seem immortal on Anthem of the Peaceful Army, the 2018 album billed as their debut (From the Fires, a record that is only 12 minutes shorter than Anthem, is apparently a double-EP). Blame it on GVF’s desperate desire to hit their marks precisely. The group is so intent on recapturing the majestic lumber of Zeppelin at their peak, they dare not miss a step, letting the riffs pile up so they suggest epics. Sometimes, guitarist Jake Kiszka, bassist Sam Kiszka, and drummer Danny Wagner do work up a head of drama — no swing, of course, because it’s harder to replicate John Bonham’s beat than approximate Jimmy Page’s guitar army — but they’re undone by Josh Kiszka, a singer who is intent on singing with velocity that he can’t muster. Josh may be the weak link, but he merely reveals how the whole band seem to have learned their moves from watching late-night concerts on Palladium while buying pre-worn vintage-styled T’s at Urban Outfitters. For the band and audience alike, Greta Van Fleet is nothing more than cosplay of the highest order. ― Allmusic

Now well into its gliding Brazilian-tinged mode, the Pat Metheny Group hits the road, as this two-CD set catches the band live in Dallas, Philadelphia, Hartford, Sacramento, and Nacogdoches, TX. Percussionist Naná Vasconcelos is still listed as a “special guest,” but ever since Wichita Falls, he had not only been a part of the group, he was the transforming element in the Metheny “sound,” adding his various shakers, effects and ethereal vocals. Sidekick Lyle Mays gets deeper into floating, glistening synthesizer textures, but he is still able to take formidable and touching solos on acoustic grand piano. Still experimenting with new hardware, Metheny’s work on a detuned guitar synthesizer gives the live “As Falls Wichita, So Falls Wichita Falls” an exotic Balinese-like sound. Other highlights are the hard Brazilian grooves on “Straight On Red” and “Song for Bilbao,” as well as the trademark Metheny glide of “Are You Going With Me?” — and the brief title track has a winning, guileless simplicity much like that of Keith Jarrett in a prayerful mood. On The Pretender, Jackson Browne took a step back from the precipice so well defined on his first three albums, but doing so didn’t seem to make him feel any better. Employing a real producer, Jon Landau, for the first time, Browne made what sounded like a real contemporary rock record, but this made his songs less effective; the ersatz Mexican arrangement of “Linda Paloma” and the bouncy second half of “Daddy’s Tune,” with its horn charts and guitar solo, undercut the lyrics. The man who had delved so deeply into life’s abyss on his earlier albums was in search of escape this time around, whether by crying (“Here Come Those Tears Again”), sleeping (“Sleep’s Dark and Silent Gate”), or making peace with estranged love ones (“The Only Child,” “Daddy’s Tune”). None of it worked, however, and when Browne came to the final track — traditionally the place on his albums where he summed up his current philosophical stance — he delivered “The Pretender,” a cynical, sarcastic treatise on moneygrubbing and the shallow life of the suburbs. Primarily inner-directed, the song’s defeatist tone demands rejection, but it is also a quintessential statement of its time, the post-Watergate ’70s; dire as that might be, you had to admire that kind of honesty, even as it made you wince. ― Allmusic

Yellow Magic Orchestra is the first official studio album by Japanese electronic music band Yellow Magic Orchestra, who were previously known as the Yellow Magic Band. Originally released by Alfa Records in Japan in 1978, the album was released by A&M Records in Europe and The United States and Canada in early 1979, with the US version featuring new cover art but without the closing track of “Acrobat”. Both versions would later be re-issued in 2003 as a double-disc format, with the American version as the first disc.

The album was an early example of synth-pop, a genre that the band helped pioneer. It contributed to the development of electro, hip hop,[8] techno,[9] and bleep techno.[10] The album’s innovations in electronic music included its use of the microprocessor-based Roland MC-8 Microcomposer music sequencer which allowed the creation of new electronic sounds, and its sampling of video game sounds.
