Instead of celebrating the 50th anniversary of the classic Astral Weeks, Van Morrison continues to deliver new work at an enviable pace. He’s long sought to release more than a recording a year in order to keep pace with his intense work ethic. In 2016 he finagled a strategy to accomplish this when he signed separate yet simultaneous label deals allowing him that freedom. The Prophet Speaks is Morrison’s fourth outing in 18 months. It follows the same musical template begun with 2017’s Roll with the Punches and Versatile in juxtaposing originals with vintage blues, R&B, and jazz covers. This particular set also continues the association he developed with organist and trumpeter Joey DeFrancesco’s fine quartet — illustrated so ably on the jazz-heavy You’re Driving Me Crazy. The Prophet Speaks digs deeper into blues and R&B than its predecessor, but sounds equally loose, joyous, and spontaneous. Its 14 tracks contain six new originals sequenced among eight skillfully performed standards. The fingerpopping opener is Eddie “Cleanhead” Vinson’s “Gonna Send You Back to Where I Got You From,” with Morrison delivering a shouted jump-blues vocal as DeFrancesco doubles on Hammond B-3 and trumpet. Bassist Troy Roberts also holds down tenor and soprano saxophones, creating the effect of a whole horn-section, as guitarist Dan Wilson delivers jazzy vamps around Michael Ode’s swinging drums. Morrison’s voice in John Lee Hooker’s “Dimples” rumbles with the sensual feel of the original, though its chart is a polished groover as DeFrancesco and Wilson offer brief, killer solos. Introduced by a righteous electric piano buoyed by upright bass, the original “Got to Go Where the Love Is” is a soul-gospel tune that would have fit nicely on 2016’s Keep Me Singing. Sandwiched between wonderfully intuitive readings of Sam Cooke’s deep soul blues “Laughin’ and Clownin'” and the slippery, gutbucket soul of Solomon Burke’s “Gotta Get You Off My Mind” (with daughter Shana Morrison on backing vocals) is Van’s jump-blues “5 A.M. Greenwich Mean Time.” DeFrancesco’s B-3 fills underscore the resonance in Morrison’s voice. This version of Willie Dixon’s “I Love the Life I Live” is a fantastic update and tribute to Morrison’s influence and hero Mose Allison’s take on it. In another fine sequential juxtaposition, the singer’s name-dropping grievance blues “Ain’t Gonna Moan No More” lands between a revisioned take on J.D Harris’ “Worried Blues/Rollin’ and Tumblin'” and Gene Barge’s “Love Is a Five Letter Word” (“spelled M-O-N-E-Y!”); an elegant B-3 and tenor add textural contrast to Morrison’s savvy vocal. Three originals close the set. “Love Is Hard Work” soulfully and bitterly takes on the troublesome topic of love, while “Spirit Will Provide” comes straight out of the singer’s Celtic soul book. The moody title track, drenched in prophetic post-midnight exhortation, recalls his reading of “Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child” on Poetic Champions Compose, with DeFrancesco adding muted trumpet fills and a solo. Clocking in at over an hour, The Prophet Speaks breezes through its run-time with memorable performances and joyous vibes. This is a late-career surge that is all the more remarkable because Morrison really seems to be enjoying himself — he continues to hunger after the music that inspired his vocation in the first place. ― Allmusic

Due for release on 16th November 2018, the newly recorded album – which features Buddy Holly’s utterly distinctive original vocals and guitar playing set to exquisite arrangements performed by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra – is the poignant realisation of a dream Holly first explored just four months before his tragic death in a plane crash at the age of 22. In that last recording session, at the Decca Studios in New York, the star was joined by an 18 piece orchestra, fronted by Dick Jacobs, the man bringing strings to rock and roll. They recorded four tracks: ‘True love Ways’, ‘Raining in My Heart’, ‘Moondreams’ and ‘It Doesn’t Matter Anymore’ all of which are soaked in strings, clearly demonstrating a new direction for Buddy.

Recorded in London’s Angel Studios, and produced by Nick Patrick, the man behind the hugely successful Elvis Presley and Roy Orbison orchestral albums, ‘True Love Ways’ truly reflects Buddy Holly’s love for strings, having learnt to play the violin as a child and continued all his life. 2018 release, their first album of new studio recordings in over two decades. Better known to many as Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares (Grammy winner for Best Traditional Folk Recording), BooCheeMish sees the esteemed Bulgarian choir performing together with erstwhile 4AD Records label mate Lisa Gerrard (co-founder of the duo Dead Can Dance) on several tracks, thereby uniting two of the most distinctive vocal acts working in music. The Early Years 1965–1972 is a compilation box set by Pink Floyd released on 11 November 2016. It was officially announced 28 July 2016. The set includes seven volumes with CDs, DVDs, Blu-rays, vinyl, and memorabilia. It contains early non-album singles plus unreleased studio and live recordings. Volumes 1–6 will be available for individual sale in 2017, while Volume 7 Continu/ation will be exclusive to the box set. A two-disc compilation titled The Early Years – Cre/ation was also made available.

On 5 November 2016, the official Pink Floyd Facebook page announced that the set would also include another extra disc—Live at Pompeii on CD. This was due to an error where the Pompeii CD had been placed inside the 1972: Obfusc/ation box instead of the 2016 mix of the Obscured by Clouds album. This meant that the Obscured by Clouds album had to be included separately in a plastic wallet; the reverse of the wallet states “Replacement CD disc for Obfusc/ation […] (Stereo 2016 mix of Pink Floyd ‘Live at Pompeii’ CD supplied in error)”

Arguably his finest record, Robert Earl Keen’s A Bigger Piece of Sky is a transitional album for him — he begins to evolve out of the terrain of his organic small-town Texas songwriting comfort zone and to walk the knife’s edge between a more expansive meld of roots rock, honky tonk country, and Western back-porch folk. Keen is an inheritor of that particular brand of songwriting that Jerry Jeff Walker established in the 1970s, where the good times and wandering life of a minstrel are juxtaposed against a small-town view of a confounding world. Produced with crisp attention to detail by Garry Velletri, Keen’s songs observe the smaller details in a private life, whether that life remains in the same place mentally and physically or, because of some mercurial and difficult-to-place event, slips over the line into forbidden territory. Both kinds of songs are here. The album opens slowly with “So I Can Take My Rest.” This is Keen at his very best. He records loneliness, uncertainty, and the vulnerability of a man at his limit, one who seeks only simple solace in the evening to get through another day. The acoustic guitars, whispering snares, and organic bassline drift and drone, propelling the singer to disclose his fear and need. And though tender and subtle, its effect is sharp, going straight for the place in the heart that wakes at night wondering if it is understood by anyone. But there’s also the rollicking working-class blues of “Amarillo Highway” and “Corpus Christi Bay,” the pathos-drenched country-rock of “Whenever Kindness Fails” and “Blow You Away,” and the shimmering uptempo country outlaw tome “Jesse With the Long Hair,” which is akin to a honky tonk version of Bob Dylan’s “Lilly, Rosemary, and the Jack of Hearts.” But there are other songs here, too, like the slick Western swing of “Daddy Had a Buick,” the old-timey country of “Crazy Cowboy Dream,” and the lonesome, sultry love song “Night Right for Love,” a duet with Maura O’Connell. And to close the set there is the tender, introspective acceptance of the title track, which reflects upon the life of a former hell-raising drifter who has settled in — despite his continued restlessness — to the peace of mind of small-town life with no regrets but an itch in his craw. This is the best kind of country song, where the desperado comes in from the cold to begin again; it’s succinct, gently humorous, and universal in its view. This is Keen at his very best. If you can only have one Robert Earl Keen disc, this is the one to consider. ― Allmusic

Simon & Garfunkel’s first masterpiece, Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme was also the first album on which the duo, in tandem with engineer Roy Halee, exerted total control from beginning to end, right down to the mixing, and it is an achievement akin to the Beatles’ Revolver or the Beach Boys’ Pet Sounds album, and just as personal and pointed as either of those records at their respective bests. After the frantic rush to put together an LP in just three weeks that characterized the Sounds of Silence album early in 1966, Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme came together over a longer gestation period of about three months, an uncommonly extended period of recording in those days, but it gave the duo a chance to develop and shape the songs the way they wanted them. The album opens with one of the last vestiges of Paul Simon’s stay in England, “Scarborough Fair/Canticle” — the latter was the duo’s adaptation of a centuries-old English folk song in an arrangement that Simon had learned from Martin Carthy. The two transformed the song into a daunting achievement in the studio, however, incorporating myriad vocal overdubs and utilizing a harpsichord, among other instruments, to embellish it, and also wove into its structure Simon’s “The Side of a Hill,” a gentle antiwar song that he had previously recorded on The Paul Simon Songbook in England. The sonic results were startling on their face, a record that was every bit as challenging in its way as “Good Vibrations,” but the subliminal effect was even more profound, mixing a hauntingly beautiful antique melody, and a song about love in a peaceful, domestic setting, with a message about war and death; Simon & Garfunkel were never as political as, say, Peter, Paul & Mary or Joan Baez, but on this record they did bring the Vietnam war home. ― Allmusic

The Soldier’s Tale is a theatrical work “”to be read, played, and danced”” by three actors (the soldier, the devil, and a narrator) and dancers, accompanied by a septet of instruments. The libretto relates the parable of a soldier who trades his fiddle to the devil in return for unlimited economic gain. The music is scored for a septet of violin, double bass, clarinet, bassoon, cornet or trumpet), trombone, and percussion. The libretto is adapted by Roger Waters from the translation by Michael Flanders and Kitty Black, based on the original text by Charles-Ferdinand Ramus. Roger Waters recorded the album because of a personal background as Mr. Waters father went missing in World War II and his grandfather died in battle in World War I. The loss of his father has been a central theme throughout his live and topic for other releases. Telegraph UK: I think I am still preoccupied by the same things that I was 30 years ago.
