Ry Cooder has always believed in the “mutuality in music,” and this may be no more evident in his career than with his fifth album, Chicken Skin Music (a Hawaiian colloquialism, synonymous with goosebumps). Even more than usual, Cooder refuses to recognize borders — geographical or musical — presenting “Stand By Me” as a gospel song with a norteño arrangement, or giving the Jim Reeves country-pop classic, “He’ll Have to Go,” a bolero rhythm, featuring the interplay of Flaco Jimenez’s accordion and Pat Rizzo’s alto sax. Elsewhere, he teams with a pair of Hawaiian greats — steel guitarist and singer Gabby Pahinui and slack key guitar master Atta Isaacs — on the Hank Snow hit “Yellow Roses” and the beautiful instrumental “Chloe.” If Cooder’s approach to the music is stylistically diverse, his choice of material certainly follows suit. Bookended by a couple of Leadbelly compositions, Chicken Skin Music sports a collection of songs ranging from the aforementioned tracks to the charming old minstrel/medicine show number “I Got Mine” and the syncopated R&B of “Smack Dab in the Middle.” Also included is Appalachian songwriter Blind Alfred Reed’s “Always Lift Him Up,” complete with a Hawaiian gospel tune, “Kanaka Wai Wai,” woven into the instrumental section. As he explains in the album’s liner notes, Cooder understands the connection between these seemingly disparate styles. This is not merely eclecticism for its own sake. Chicken Skin Music is probably Ry Cooder’s most eccentric record since his first, but it’s also one of his most entertaining. ― Allmusic

The other side of Bob Dylan referred to in the title is presumably his romantic, absurdist, and whimsical one — anything that wasn’t featured on the staunchly folky, protest-heavy Times They Are a-Changin’, really. Because of this, Another Side of Bob Dylan is a more varied record and it’s more successful, too, since it captures Dylan expanding his music, turning in imaginative, poetic performances on love songs and protest tunes alike. This has an equal number of classics to its predecessor, actually, with “All I Really Want to Do,” “Chimes of Freedom,” “My Back Pages,” “I Don’t’ Believe You,” and “It Ain’t Me Babe” standing among his standards, but the key to the record’s success is the album tracks, which are graceful, poetic, and layered. Both the lyrics and music have gotten deeper and Dylan’s trying more things — this, in its construction and attitude, is hardly strictly folk, as it encompasses far more than that. The result is one of his very best records, a lovely intimate affair. ― Allmusic

Tenor saxophonist Arnett Cobb, who was inactive between 1957 and 1958 due to a serious auto accident, recorded three strong albums for Prestige during the first half of 1959. This CD reissue is the only one of the trio that features Cobb as the only horn and backed by a pianist (Ray Bryant) instead of an organ player. With bassist Wendell Marshall, drummer Art Taylor and Ray Barretto on conga completing the group, most of the focus is on Cobb’s tough yet flexible tenor. Such songs as “When My Dreamboat Comes Home,” “Blues in the Closet” and a remake of “Flying Home” make this the definitive Arnett Cobb album from the era. Highly recommended ― Allmusic

After the muddled production and ultracomplicated song structures of …And Justice for All, Metallica decided that they had taken the progressive elements of their music as far as they could and that a simplification and streamlining of their sound was in order. While the assessment made sense from a musical standpoint, it also presented an opportunity to commercialize their music, and Metallica accomplishes both goals. The best songs are more melodic and immediate, the crushing, stripped-down grooves of “Enter Sandman,” “Sad but True,” and “Wherever I May Roam” sticking to traditional structures and using the same main riffs throughout; the crisp, professional production by Bob Rock adds to their accessibility. “The Unforgiven” and “Nothing Else Matters” avoid the slash-and-burn guitar riffs that had always punctuated the band’s ballads; the latter is a full-fledged love song complete with string section, which works much better than might be imagined. The song- and riff-writing slips here and there, a rare occurrence for Metallica, which some longtime fans interpreted as filler next to a batch of singles calculated for commercial success. The objections were often more to the idea that Metallica was doing anything explicitly commercial, but millions more disagreed. In fact, the band’s popularity exploded so much that most of their back catalog found mainstream acceptance in its own right, while other progressively inclined speed metal bands copied the move toward simplification. In retrospect, Metallica is a good, but not quite great, album, one whose best moments deservedly captured the heavy metal crown, but whose approach also foreshadowed a creative decline. ― Allmusic

After making a small buzz with the Inside Wants Out EP, John Mayer hired veteran producer John Alagía (known for his work with the Dave Matthews Band) to beef up his full-length debut with commercial polish. Released in September 2001, Room for Squares proved to be a well-timed album, quietly heralding the end of teen pop’s glory days with clever wordplay, savvy chord progressions, and mature songwriting. Songs like “No Such Thing” and “Neon” mixed jazz chords with digestible choruses, fashioning a sort of brainy, college-educated pop hybrid that appealed to discerning listeners and mainstream fans alike. Of course, it didn’t hurt that Mayer also loaded the album with more straightforward numbers — particularly “Your Body Is a Wonderland,” a bubbling piece of bedroom pop that helped expand his female audience. Mayer’s soon-to-be famous guitar solos and bluesy, Stevie Ray Vaughan-styled riffs were sorely absent from the mix, though, as he limited the bulk of his fretwork to the acoustic guitar. It would take a jam-friendly concert album — 2003’s Any Given Thursday — to introduce the full range of Mayer’s axeman skills to the public, but Room for Squares still provides a nice introduction to his catalog, highlighting his blend of collegiate pop/rock and sensitive acoustics while only hinting at the genre-hopping chameleon he’d later become. ― Allmusic

Don’t take the title of John Mayer’s Heavier Things literally. Mayer offers nothing heavy on the follow-up to his breakthrough hit, Room for Squares — nothing heavy in the music and nothing heavy in the lyrics. No, Mayer is smooth, slick, and streamlined on his second or third album (it all depends if you count his 1999 debut, Inside Wants Out, half of which was re-recorded for Room for Squares, which itself was released in two different incarnations), playing things straight and following the blueprint his big radio hit, “Your Body Is a Wonderland,” provided. The title Heavier Things does reflect his new directness, lacking the lithe playfulness that resulted in a Hank Mobley joke, of all things, for an album title last time out. That extends to the rest of the album — the humor and interesting wordplay have been toned down, leaving very little ambiguity. Actually, there’s little left unexplained on the record, with every song on the album spread across several grids explaining where they were written and how many beats per minute they are, breaking them down into keywords, charting what “suggested target points” on the body the song should hit (tellingly, not one track is targeted at the crotch), and even grouping the songs together by key. The latter is a bit of a mistake, since it shows that for all those jazzy major and minor seventh chords gliding by in his songs, he’s keeping his songwriting pretty simple, sticking to D, E, F, G, and A, with a G minor thrown in for good measure. This, of course, is not really a problem for listeners, since most listeners don’t care how a song is written as long as it sounds good, but this does confirm that he’s kept things simple, concentrating on how the record sounds and feels. And, as a piece of mood music, this is really quite effective, delivering on how “Your Body Is a Wonderland” sounds, with some really nice lush, laid-back textures and songs that are melodic without being truly catchy. It’s music that floats through the speakers nicely and never leaves much of a lasting impression; it’s how a jazzier, laid-back, less adventurous, and MOR-oriented Dave Matthews would sound. Mayer is now more of a record-maker than songwriter, which will undoubtedly dishearten those who liked the song-oriented Inside Wants Out, but those who just enjoyed the sound and feel of Room for Squares should feel right at home. ― Allmusic

Years of canonization have obscured how John Coltrane was at a bit of crossroads in the early ’60s, playing increasingly adventurous music on-stage while acquiescing to Impulse!’s desire to record marketable albums. Whenever he could, producer Bob Thiele would capture Coltrane working out new music with pianist McCoy Tyner, drummer Elvin Jones, and bassist Jimmy Garrison. One of these sessions happened at Rudy Van Gelder’s New Jersey studio on March 6, 1963, when Coltrane’s quartet was in the thick of a residency at New York’s Birdland and just before they were scheduled to cut an album with vocalist Johnny Hartman. John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman appeared in record stores in July 1963, but apart from “Vilia,” which popped up on an Impulse! sampler in 1965, the March 6 session sat on the shelf for decades, eventually getting ditched when the label decided to clear out its vaults in the 1970s. Coltrane’s reference tape survived, eventually unearthed by his family and assembled for release as Both Directions at Once by Impulse! in 2018.

Both Directions at Once — which is available as a single disc and as a double-disc set containing all the alternate takes from the session — exists on a plane that’s somewhere between a rehearsal and a finished album. Two of the original songs are untitled, their melodic themes are perhaps a shade fuzzy, the band is vigorous but loose. It lacks the polish of the albums Impulse! released during Coltrane’s lifetime, in other words, but that slight rough edge also lends Both Directions at Once no small share of vitality which, in turn, makes it seem even livelier when compared to the two collaborative LPs the label put out in 1963. Throughout the recordings, the quartet is stretching and testing itself, inching ever closer to the exploratory sound that would define Coltrane’s mid-’60s. They’re still firmly within the realm of accessible bop here, expanding “Nature Boy” and finding crevices within the bars of “Slow Blues,” while the original material — including “Impressions,” which would provide the title track on a subsequent 1963 album — is conversational yet elliptical, pushing at the boundaries of the expected without truly breaking free. As a historical document, this is a necessary footnote, providing evidence that the experimental side of Coltrane did not lay dormant during the early ’60s, but the pleasant surprise is that Both Directions at Once is also enjoyable on its own terms as a long-playing record. Impulse! has sequenced the existing recordings so they have an ebb and flow that mirrors a finished album. Just as impressively, the bonus disc of alternate takes works on its own terms, while also lending an illusion that the first disc is a completed work. And that means Both Directions at Once is truly a rare thing: an important discovery from the vault that’s also a blast to hear. ― Allmusic

The 27 tracks on the Beatles 1 have been remixed from the original multi-track masters by Giles Martin (the first three in mono). The Beatles 1+ also includes 50 promotional films/performances, plus commentary and introductions from Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr. All videos have been digitally restored and enhanced. They are available on DVD and Blu-ray.
