A Black & White Night Live, the live album, was compiled and released posthumously from the television special. The album was released in February 1989 and included the songs “Blue Bayou” and “Claudette” that were cut from the original broadcast for time. However it did not include the song “Blue Angel” which was cut from the original broadcast for the same reason. The SACD/CD Hybrid Audio Disc includes “Blue Angel” as a bonus track – the SACD/CD Hybrid Disc is contained in a pack with the DVD released by Image Entertainment, USA.

The audiophile label Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs is known for their meticulously mastered and manufactured reissues of back catalog albums, but they generally seem more interested in classic jazz and rock from the ’70s onward than first generation rock & roll, which makes their two-fer reissue of Little Richard’s first two albums for Specialty such a pleasant surprise. While fans have been accustomed to hearing the 24 classic tunes on this disc on reissues sourced from tapes many generations down from the originals (and often in fake stereo), MFSL have remastered these tracks in glorious mono, with decades of aural grime buffed away, and the results are impressive. On many of these songs, despite the single channel sound sources, it’s easier than ever before to hear the details separating Richard from his band, and the audio (mostly recorded by the great Cosimo Matassa at his J&M Studios in New Orleans) is straightforward but full of depth, with the bass and drums swinging gloriously, the piano rolling like the Mississippi River, and the horns pealing with joy. And as music, this disc is a near-peerless introduction to Little Richard’s early work; he rarely topped the fire and strength of these sessions, and most of his biggest and best hits are on board, including “Tutti Frutti,” “Lucille,” “The Girl Can’t Help It,” “Rip It Up,” “God Golly, Miss Molly” and lots more. Given that MFSL have pressed this on a multi-layer gold CD with both standard and SACD functionality, this is a much pricier item than most single-disc Little Richard collections, but the material here has never sounded quite this good on compact disc, and the music is superb — fans of first era rock with an taste for high fidelity will find this release to be a major kick on both levels. ― Allmusic

Love broadened their scope into psychedelia on their sophomore effort, Arthur Lee’s achingly melodic songwriting gifts reaching full flower. The six songs that comprised the first side of this album when it was first issued are a truly classic body of work, highlighted by the atomic blast of pre-punk rock “Seven & Seven Is” (their only hit single), the manic jazz tempos of “Stephanie Knows Who,” and the enchanting “She Comes in Colors,” perhaps Lee’s best composition (and reportedly the inspiration for the Rolling Stones’ “She’s a Rainbow”). It’s only half a great album, though; the seventh and final track, “Revelation,” is a tedious 19-minute jam that keeps Da Capo from attaining truly classic status. ― Allmusic

Love’s Forever Changes made only a minor dent on the charts when it was first released in 1967, but years later it became recognized as one of the finest and most haunting albums to come out of the Summer of Love, which doubtless has as much to do with the disc’s themes and tone as the music, beautiful as it is. Sharp electric guitars dominated most of Love’s first two albums, and they make occasional appearances here on tunes like “A House Is Not a Motel” and “Live and Let Live,” but most of Forever Changes is built around interwoven acoustic guitar textures and subtle orchestrations, with strings and horns both reinforcing and punctuating the melodies. The punky edge of Love’s early work gave way to a more gentle, contemplative, and organic sound on Forever Changes, but while Arthur Lee and Bryan MacLean wrote some of their most enduring songs for the album, the lovely melodies and inspired arrangements can’t disguise an air of malaise that permeates the sessions. A certain amount of this reflects the angst of a group undergoing some severe internal strife, but Forever Changes is also an album that heralds the last days of a golden age and anticipates the growing ugliness that would dominate the counterculture in 1968 and 1969; images of violence and war haunt “A House Is Not a Motel,” the street scenes of “Maybe the People Would Be the Times or Between Clark and Hillsdale” reflects a jaded mindset that flower power could not ease, the twin specters of race and international strife rise to the surface of “The Red Telephone,” romance becomes cynicism in “Bummer in the Summer,” the promise of the psychedelic experience decays into hard drug abuse in “Live and Let Live,” and even gentle numbers like “Andmoreagain” and “Old Man” sound elegiac, as if the ghosts of Chicago and Altamont were visible over the horizon as Love looked back to brief moments of warmth. Forever Changes is inarguably Love’s masterpiece and an album of enduring beauty, but it’s also one of the few major works of its era that saw the dark clouds looming on the cultural horizon, and the result was music that was as prescient as it was compelling. ― Allmusic

Love’s FOREVER CHANGES is the psychedelic folk-rock pioneers’ finest achievement. The second time around, Art Garfunkel turned to pop producer Richard Perry, who liked to record in studios rather than cathedrals and who replaced the angelic style of the first album with a lush pop approach. The result was Garfunkel’s best-selling album. The title track and a cover of “I Only Have Eyes for You” reached the Top 40 (the latter topped the U.K. charts), though the most prominent song was the Simon & Garfunkel reunion single “My Little Town.” But the album was full of wise pop choices, among them Bruce Johnston’s “Disney Girls,” Stevie Wonder’s “I Believe (When I Fall in Love It Will Be Forever),” and Hal David and Albert Hammond’s “1199 Miles from L.A.” Perry proved that, given the right material and production, the problem of the relative sameness of Garfunkel’s vocal approach could be overcome. ― Allmusic

Garfunkel (he was billed without his first name here) had a lot riding on his debut solo album, and Angel Clare, named after a character in Thomas Hardy’s novel Tess of the d’Urbervilles, lived up to the heightened expectations for the man who had sung “Bridge Over Troubled Water” and other Simon & Garfunkel favorites. Garfunkel took no chances, issuing as the first single Jimmy Webb’s “All I Know,” which was arranged in a similar style to “Bridge” and made the Top Ten. Elsewhere on the record, Garfunkel took a more spirited approach, notably on a version of Van Morrison’s “I Shall Sing” that was reminiscent of Simon & Garfunkel’s “Cecilia” and made the Top 40. Certainly, there was enough firepower on the record, which featured guitarists Jerry Garcia and J.J. Cale. But much of it was filled with stately, orchestra-laden ballads, sung by Garfunkel in his naïve, breathy tenor. If Simon & Garfunkel had been the thinking man’s Everly Brothers, Garfunkel alone turned out to be the thinking man’s Johnny Mathis. ― Allmusic

Both Sides of the Sky is another collection of high-quality studio recordings, dating from 1968-1970. It might surprise some that, 45-plus years after his death, there’s still good material that hasn’t been previously released, but Hendrix was recording nearly all the time at this point, whether they were demos done in his apartment, late-night jamming with friends, working on new material, or finishing/reworking older tracks. The Record Plant recordings have been heavily bootlegged, but the truly surprising thing about this collection is the amount of material even hardcore Hendrix collectors may not have heard yet.

For this version of “Mannish Boy,” Jimi grafts the Muddy Waters classic lyrics to an “Izabella”-style riff. “Lover Man” has been floating around in various incarnations, but this one from late 1969 sounds like a new take. “Hear My Train A Comin'” is a hot, live-in-the-studio version and one of the final recordings of the original Jimi Hendrix Experience. “Stepping Stone” was briefly released as a single before being withdrawn, but this one has additional elements that haven’t been heard before. “$20 Fine” is one of a couple tracks that come courtesy of Stephen Stills, who sings and plays some nice organ. The other Stills track is a cover of Joni Mitchell’s “Woodstock” (with Jimi on bass), recorded well before the Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young version. “Power of Soul” is a track that Hendrix probably cut at least dozens of guitar tracks for. Parts of this one sound familiar, while some parts definitely do not. This “Jungle” is different from a widely bootlegged track with the same title. This is a new track very similar to “Villanova Junction Blues.” “Things I Used to Do” with Johnny Winter is another one that’s been floating in bootleg circles for years, but it’s a great track and nice to have it properly mixed and released.

“Georgia Blues” is another one that hasn’t been circulated. It’s a standard blues with old friend Lonnie Youngblood on vocals and sax and some nice organ from John Winfield. There’s a nice, unheard instrumental version of “Angel” (titled “Sweet Angel” here) with Jimi on guitar, bass, and vibraphone! “Send My Love to Linda” and “Cherokee Mist” are also well known to collectors. However, this version of “Send My Love to Linda” cobbles together three different unfinished takes (one solo and two with an added rhythm section) that don’t really fit together. It’s interesting showing how Jimi’s ideas progressed, but the edits are pretty noticeable and don’t make for great listening. The real gem of this set is “Cherokee Mist,” though. It’s a completely finished (probably) studio recording with Jimi on Coral Sitar and feedback guitar with Mitch on drums. Written in honor of Hendrix’s Cherokee heritage, it’s a beautiful instrumental and a feedback tour de force. While a bit uneven in spots, Both Sides of the Sky is well worth it for an avid Hendrix fan. ― Allmusic

Tom Petty has been fronting the Heartbreakers off and on (mostly on) for over 30 years now, and he and his band have been delivering a high level of no-frills, classy, and reconstituted American garage rock through all of it. Petty often gets lumped in with artists like Bruce Springsteen, whose careful and worked-over lyrics carry a kind of instant nostalgia, but Petty’s songwriting at its best cleverly bounces off of romance clichés, often with a desperate, lustful drawl and sneer, and he’s usually been more concerned with the here and now than he is about musing about what’s been abused and lost in contemporary America, although he’s certainly not blind to it. Petty has always been more immediate than that — until now, that is. Mojo is Petty’s umpteenth album, and technically the first he’s done with the Heartbreakers since 2002’s sly The Last DJ. This time out he’s tackling the blues, trying to graft the Heartbreakers’ (Mike Campbell on guitar, Scott Thurston on guitar and harmonica, Benmont Tench on keyboards, Ron Blair on bass, and Steve Ferrone on drums) patented 1960s garage sound to the Chicago blues sound of Chess Records in the 1950s. Sonically it certainly works, mostly because this is a wonderful band, but then it all seems a little tired, worn, and exhausted, too, and not a single song here has that certain desperate, determined defiance that Petty has always delivered in the past with a knowing sneer and a little leering wink. The opener, “Jefferson Jericho Blues,” is a case in point. It starts by being a song about Thomas Jefferson’s dalliance with one of his black maids, and it could have been a scathing indictment of an out-of-date Southern attitude, contemporary racism, and so much more. Instead, it tumbles unfocused into, well, a song about missing a girl and how time moves slow, and one can’t help but wonder why Petty dragged Thomas Jefferson and his maid into any of it in the first place. Petty has never sounded so emotionally drained and detached as a vocalist as he does on this album, and while it’s nice to hear the Heartbreakers flirt with the blues — and to hear Campbell’s clear, precise slide guitar playing — there’s no excuse for not having solid songs to scaffold it. There’s a worn-out, regretful, and boringly meditative tone to so many tracks here — this is not what one expects from a band that rocks as fine as this one can. Again, the playing is solid, but one wishes Petty & the Heartbreakers had simply covered some of those old Chess classics rather than trying half-heartedly to write their own — it would have made for an album closer to intent. ― Allmusic

Best of Scorpions is a compilation album by the German heavy metal band Scorpions. It was released in November 17, 1979 in the United States. The record contains songs from their albums between Fly to the Rainbow and Taken by Force. No songs were culled from their debut album, Lonesome Crow.

The original German edition of the cover art featured an image of a scorpion stinging a naked girl’s hip. The Japanese edition features an alternative cover showing a naked female’s buttocks. The 1984 U.S. re-release cover featured an image of a man wearing a leather jacket and a scorpion necklace. The album was reissued for the first time on CD in 1984.

In the summer of 2016, Jeff Beck celebrated 50 years of his musical career with a special concert at the famous Hollywood Bowl. The setlist reached back to his first recordings with The Yardbirds in 1966 and came right up to date with tracks from his most recent album Loud Hailer. As the evening progressed he was joined by many of the great musicians he has collaborated with over the years including Billy F. Gibbons, Buddy Guy, Jimmy Hall, Jan Hammer, Beth Hart and Steven Tyler.
