This pairing of two totally idiosyncratic vocalists acquired legendary status over the decades in which it had been out of print. But the proof is in the listening, and frankly it doesn’t represent either artist’s best work. There is certainly a powerful, often sexy rapport between the two — Charles in his sweet balladeering mode, Carter with her uniquely keening, drifting high register — and they definitely create sparks in the justly famous rendition of “Baby, It’s Cold Outside.” The main problem is in Marty Paich’s string/choir arrangements, which too often cross the line into treacle, whereas his charts for big band are far more listenable. Moreover, Charles’ sweetness can get a bit cloying, too, although some of the old grit emerges on “Takes Two to Tango.” [Some reissues add the great, rare B-side to the “Unchain My Heart” single, “But on the Other Hand Baby,” and two excellent if unrelated album cuts, “I Never See Maggie Alone” (1964) and “I Like to Hear It Sometime” (1966).] ― Allmusic

Delivering a political album is always risky, with the possibility that it will get locked in its historical era usually a direct consequence. On their 18th album, prog rockers Marillion don’t seem to care, and they have nothing to lose and no one to account to but themselves. FEAR is an acronym for “Fuck Everybody and Run.” Two of its three lengthy, multi-part suites (“El Dorado” and “The New Kings”) are overtly political statements that look at England and the calamitous state of the world not only observationally but experientially. Topical songs have been part of the band’s catalog as far back as 1984’s “Fugazi,” and have shown up as recently as the multi-part “Gaza,” from 2012’s Sounds That Can’t Be Made (the latter was perhaps an impetus for this record). The centerpiece, “The Leavers,” is an inside view of life on the road, the strain it places on relationships, and how tenuous one’s connection to the world can become as a result. There are also three independent tracks that evolve from the suites.

The first section of “El Dorado” commences as a reverie on an England at once exactly the same but eerily and disturbingly different. As guitarist Steve Rothery and keyboardist Mark Kelly urge vocalist Steve Hogarth on in the second section, as he laments the pursuit of capital as more deadly than plutonium, drummer Ian Mosely and bassist Pete Trewavas offer a progression reminiscent of Pink Floyd’s “Any Colour You Like” before the band opens up and Hogarth soars. The fourth section broodingly then thunderously reflects on the tolls of war, nationalism, religious fanaticism, and environmental decay. Amazingly, it’s not preachy, but deeply personal. Kelly’s orchestral keyboard stylings are brilliant. The hinge cut, “Living in Fear,” is the catchiest thing here, with an anthemic, sweeping chorus, and a stinging guitar in the bridge with a hook that is almost pop. Throughout its four sections, “The Leavers” weaves from the gently melodic to the majestic. Hogarth’s lyrics have matured, delivering deep insight into the melancholy state of being the protagonist inhabits, as the trace of Radiohead’s influence that slips in and out of the mix offers a poignant sense of alienation and dislocation. “The New Kings” is the knottiest, most intense track on the set. Over 16 minutes long, it’s a scathing, sarcastic takedown of the new political power brokers: Corporate overlords whose cynicism is a virus. Throughout its four parts it shifts in tempo, key, and form, wafting, hovering, and power rocking through to an apocalyptic conclusion.

Fans of the musical direction Marillion pursued during the ’90s on Brave and This Strange Engine will find much to enjoy on FEAR. It requires repeated listening to fully absorb, but the payoff is easily the band’s most consistent, inspiring date since 2004’s Marbles. ― Allmusic

Genius Loves Company is the last studio album Ray Charles completed before his death in June 2004. Prior to this, the last studio album he released was Strong Love Affair in 1996, which was a stab at modern pop, filled with new songs and given an adult contemporary sheen. It was not one of his most distinctive efforts, even when judged against his latter-day albums, and it disappeared not long after its release. Charles left Warner and, years later, signed with Concord, who released Genius Loves Company, which had a decidedly different approach than the all-modern Strong Love Affair. As the title acknowledges with a wink, this is a duets album, which may be a little commonplace as far as latter-day superstar albums go but is still a step up from his previous studio album since it puts Ray Charles in a comfortable, relaxed situation that plays to his strengths. Instead of trying to put Charles in a modern setting, producers John Burk and Phil Ramone (Burk helmed seven of the album’s tracks, Ramone is responsible for the other five, and their work fits together seamlessly) go for a clean retro setting with a few guitars, synths, and a rhythm section, occasionally dressing it with an orchestra or some strings. In other words, apart from the glistening production, it’s not far removed from any of Charles’ crossover records from the ’60s, and he’s also given a strong set of songs, largely familiar pop classics, from “Fever” and “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” to “Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word” and “Crazy Love.” His duet partners are fairly predictable — classy newcomers like Norah Jones and Diana Krall, but also old stalwarts like Elton John, B.B. King, Johnny Mathis, James Taylor, Bonnie Raitt, and the ubiquitous Willie Nelson (who has never sounded older than he does here on “It Was a Very Good Year”) — but they’re also reliable, never overshadowing Ray yet never shrinking in his shadow either; in short, it sounds more like a real duets album than most superstar duet records. The end result is modest, friendly, laid-back, and pleasing, one that remains faithful to Charles’ music while sounding relatively fresh. It may not be weighty enough to be a career-capping masterpiece, but it’s sweet enough to be an appropriate final album — which is far more than can be said of Strong Love Affair, or any of the other albums he cut in the ’80s or ’90s for that matter. ― Allmusic

Journey was formed originally as a vehicle for Neal Schon’s guitar pyrotechnics, but after five years the band sought out a lead singer to give them mainstream pop appeal, and Steve Perry did that, helping them to a string of seven consecutive multi-platinum albums before the band broke up in 1987. A 1996 reunion put them back in the winners’ circle with Trial by Fire, but Perry then bowed out for health reasons, putting Journey in the sticky position of recruiting a new lead singer. (Drummer Steve Smith has also been replaced by Deen Castronovo formerly of Bad English.) They chose a soundalike, Steve Augeri, which suggests that they are more concerned with recreating their hits in concert than in making new music. A group of Journey’s vintage always risks sounding like a copy band of itself, and Arrival, the first full-length album with Augeri, realizes that danger. The singer doesn’t quite have Perry’s smooth, flowing tenor, but he’s close enough so that much of the time, especially in big arrangements, he can fool you, though at unadorned moments on ballads he sounds different. When he’s not singing, the music is even more like Journey, with Schon’s soaring leads supported by Jonathan Cain’s bright keyboards in typical arena rock arrangements. It’s hard to argue that the generalized romantic sentiments that make up the lyrics, here contributed by a variety of people including Augeri and Cain’s wife, are any worse than Perry’s, but Perry sang his words with more feeling than Augeri does. Boston is one of the best-selling albums of all time, and deservedly so. Because of the rise of disco and punk, FM rock radio seemed all but dead until the rise of acts like Boston, Tom Petty, and Bruce Springsteen. Nearly every song on Boston’s debut album could still be heard on classic rock radio decades later due to the strong vocals of Brad Delp and unique guitar sound of Tom Scholz. Tom Scholz, who wrote most of the songs, was a studio wizard and used self-designed equipment such as 12-track recording devices to come up with an anthemic “arena rock” sound before the term was even coined. The sound was hard rock, but the layered melodies and harmonics reveal the work of a master craftsman. While much has been written about the sound of the album, the lyrics are often overlooked. There are songs about their rise from a bar band (“Rock and Roll Band”) as well as fond remembrances of summers gone by (“More Than a Feeling”). This classic 1964 recording by Ray Charles includes 12 vintage tracks performed to perfection. His voice is in great shape, and the recording by Wally Heider is a marvel for its day; all the instruments are placed nicely with Charles’ voice out front where it belongs. There’s a slinky version of “Hallelujah I Love Her So,” the musicians creating nice little changes behind Charles’ soulful nuances. The singer tells us Miss Lillian Ford of the Raelets “helps out” on “Don’t Set Me Free”; it’s a duet and a nice change of pace. Rick Ward’s tacky liner notes fail to say who is backing up the singer at The Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, except for David “Fathead” Newman credited with the tenor solo on “Swing a Little Taste,” the opening track. Not to be confused with the 1973 re-release Ray Charles Live, which is comprised of 1958 and 1959 concerts, this album is called Live in Concert, and is Charles in Los Angeles after a Japanese tour in 1964. “What I’d Say” and a nice version of “Margie” are here, along with a six-minute take on “I Gotta Woman.” For the finale he has the Ray Charles Choir come out to help close the show with a marching-band version of “Pop Goes the Weasel.” The 12 tracks are priceless Ray Charles, especially the reinvention of “You Don’t Know Me,” stirringly different from his timeless hit version but just as impressive. Emerson Lake & Palmer‘s third album Trilogy is being reissued later this month (ELP) by Sony Music and the new deluxe edition will feature a brand new 5.1 mix, new stereo mixes and previously unheard version of From The Beginning.

The 1972 long-player is expanded two three discs – two CDs and a DVD-audio – for this new set, with CD 2 including brand new stereo mixes (and the unheard version of From The Beginning). The third disc (a DVD-audio) contains the surround sound mix put together by King Crimson’s Jakko Jakszyk.

The 5.1 mix is lossless hi-res if you have compatible equipment, if not the surround mix can be enjoyed in DTS or Dolby 5.1 via any standard DVD player (and a surround speaker set-up, of course!). The DVD also contains hi-res stereo versions of the new mixes, as well as hi-res stereo versions of the original mixes.
