Little Girl Blue is the debut album by jazz singer, pianist and songwriter Nina Simone, released by Bethlehem Records. Simone was in her mid-20s at the time, and still aspiring to be a classical concert pianist. She immediately sold the rights for the songs on this album to Bethlehem for $3,000 (US$25,446 in 2017 dollars), with the deal eventually costing her royalty profits of more than a million dollars. Simone was dissatisfied by the lack of effort the record company took in promoting her, and after this album she formed a long business relationship with Colpix Records. The album Nina Simone and Her Friends was released after she had left Bethlehem, without her consent, and comprised songs that were left over from the Little Girl Blue recording session. The session was the only one ever recorded for Bethlehem.

The original 1958 album was released in mono, but a second issue the following year, by Bethlehem Records (SBCP-6028), was stereo.

Elvis Costello and Burt Bacharach first collaborated on “God Give Me Strength,” a sweeping ballad that functioned as the centerpiece in Allison Anders’ Grace of My Heart. It was a stunning song in the tradition of Bacharach’s classic ’60s work and it was successful enough that the composers decided to collaborate on a full album, Painted from Memory. Wisely, they chose to work within the stylistic parameters of Bacharach’s ’60s material, but Painted from Memory never sounds like a stylistic exercise. Instead, it’s a return to form for both artists. Bacharach hasn’t written such graceful, powerful melodies since his glory days, and Costello hasn’t crafted such a fully realized album since King of America. It’s a testament to both that even if the album is clearly in Bacharach’s territory, it feels like a genuine collaboration. Often, the music not only evokes the spirit of Dionne Warwick, it’s reminiscent of Elvis’ torching ballads for Trust. Costello keeps Bacharach from his schmaltzier tendencies, and Bacharach keeps Costello from overwriting. With its lush arrangements, sighing brass and strings, gentle pianos, and backing vocals, it’s clearly a classicist album, yet it sounds utterly timeless. Its melodies are immediate, its emotions subtle, its impact lasting — and, with that timeless sound, Painted from Memory illustrates that craft cannot only be its own reward, it can be genuinely moving. ― Allmusic

The Who’s Live at the Royal Albert Hall captures a charity concert for a cancer organization the reunited group performed in November of 2000. Given the band’s spotty track record in their farewell tours and reunions of the ’80s and ’90s, it’s easy for some longtime fans to be skeptical of the musical merits of the triple-disc hybrid SACD release of this concert, but this is an exceptional reunion concert, finding the band at their strongest since their early-’80s breakup. Supported by drummer Zak Starkey and longtime keyboardist John “Rabbit” Bundrick, Pete Townshend, Roger Daltrey, and John Entwistle (in one of his last major concerts) sound reinvigorated, playing such standards as “I Can’t Explain” and “Anyway, Anyhow, Anywhere” with vigor and energy, as if they haven’t played them countless times. The group also stretches out, as Townshend contributes a new bridge to “The Kids Are Alright” and the band jams through “Magic Bus,” “5:15,” and “Won’t Get Fooled Again,” showing both dexterity and muscle. While nobody would mistake this show with the careening power and unpredictability of the band at their peak in the ’60s and ’70s, this is an impressive mix of maturity, professionalism, and passion, finding the group regaining their sense of authority and integrity — compare this to such rote reunions as Join Together to hear the difference. At three discs (including four bonus tracks recorded at another Royal Albert Hall show in February 2002), this is a bit long, but for those longtime fans, there’s plenty to like here. After all, it’s very rare for a reunion album to be this good, and it’s even rarer to have one with cameos as good as those here — Townshend’s duet with Paul Weller on “So Sad About Us” and two songs fronted by Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder (“I’m One,” “Getting in Tune”) are as good as those songs by Daltrey, and help make Live at the Royal Albert Hall a really pleasant surprise. ― Allmusic

After disintegrating the Amboy Dukes in the early ’70s, Ted Nugent finally decided to strike out on his own as a solo star. Even without a recording contract, Nugent toured constantly, built up a fervent following, and created a smoking hard rock quartet with the help of singer/guitarist Derek St. Holmes, bassist Rob Grange, and drummer Cliff Davies. The band’s first release, 1975’s Ted Nugent, is a prime slice of testosterone-heavy, raging, unapologetic rock & roll, and along with the band’s 1977 release Cat Scratch Fever, it is Nugent’s best solo studio album. While the grinding opening track, “Stranglehold,” stretches beyond eight minutes and contains several extended, fiery-hot guitar leads, it does not come off as your typical ’70s overindulgent fare — every single note counts, as Nugent wails away as if his life depended on it. Other Nuge classics include “Motor City Madhouse,” plus the St. Holmes-sung “Hey Baby” and “Just What the Doctor Ordered,” all eventually becoming arena staples and making the band one of the late-’70s top concert draws. Additional highlights are the unexpected breezy jazz ballad “You Make Me Feel Right at Home,” plus the untamed rockers “Stormtroopin'” and “Queen of the Forest.” Nugent himself hails Ted Nugent as his best work, and with good reason. Arc of a Diver is the second solo studio album by singer/multi-instrumentalist Steve Winwood, released in 1980. Winwood played all of the instruments on the album.

Featuring his first solo hit, “While You See a Chance” (which peaked at number 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States), this was Winwood’s breakthrough album as a solo artist. It peaked at number 3 on the Billboard 200 album chart, establishing him as a commercially viable act.

Lush Life is an album credited to jazz musician John Coltrane, released in 1961 on Prestige Records, catalogue 7188. It is assembled from unissued results of three separate recording sessions at Van Gelder Studio in Hackensack, New Jersey in 1957 and 1958. As Coltrane’s fame grew during the 1960s long after he had stopped recording for the label, Prestige used unissued recordings to create new marketable albums without Coltrane’s input or approval.
