KING CRIMSON COLLECTOR’S CLUB

If there is one group that embodies progressive rock, it is King Crimson. Led by guitar/Mellotron virtuoso Robert Fripp, during its first five years of existence the band stretched both the language and structure of rock into realms of jazz and classical music, all the while avoiding pop and psychedelic sensibilities. The absence of mainstream compromises and the lack of an overt sense of humor ultimately doomed the group to nothing more than a large cult following, but made their albums among the most enduring and respectable of the prog rock era.

King Crimson originally grew out of the remnants of an unsuccessful trio called Giles, Giles & Fripp. Michael Giles (drums, vocals), Peter Giles (bass, vocals), and Robert Fripp (guitar) had begun working together in late 1967 after playing in a variety of bands: Fripp’s resume included tenures with the League of Gentlemen and the Majestic Dance Orchestra, while the Giles brothers had played with Trendsetters, Ltd. After signing to Deram, the trio recorded their debut single, “One in a Million,” and began cutting a follow-up album, The Cheerful Insanity of Giles, Giles & Fripp, during the summer of 1968. ― Allmusic

Emerson, Lake & Palmer were progressive rock’s first supergroup. Their flamboyance on record and in the studio echoed the best work of the heavy metal bands of the era, proving that classical rockers could compete for that arena-scale audience. Over and above their own commercial success, the trio also paved the way for the success of such bands as Yes, who would become their chief rivals for much of the 1970s.

Keyboardist Keith Emerson planted the seeds of the group in late 1969 when his band the Nice shared a bill at the Fillmore West with King Crimson, and the two first spoke of the possibility of working together. After the Crimson lineup began disintegrating during their first U.S. tour, Lake opted to leave the group. Upon officially teaming in 1970, Emerson and Lake auditioned several drummers before they approached Carl Palmer, not yet 20 years old and already an overpowering talent, as well as a former member of the Crazy World of Arthur Brown and Atomic Rooster. ― Allmusic

Prior to the 2015 collection Rock ‘n’ Roll Fantasy: The Very Best of Bad Company, there were only two Bad Company compilations in release: the lean 1985 set 10 from 6, arriving a full six years after their last hit album, and 1999’s The Original Bad Company Anthology, a 33-track double-disc set that dug deep into the group’s golden years of 1974-1982. Rock ‘n’ Roll Fantasy occupies a much-needed middle ground, providing 19 songs on a generous single disc. This, like The Original Bad Company Anthology, focuses solely on the six albums Bad Company cut for Swan Song, which means there’s nothing from their late-’80s/early-’90s run on Atco, even though “No Smoke Without a Fire,” “Holy Water,” “If You Needed Somebody,” and “How About That” are also owned by WEA and could easily have been included. So, this is all a matter of aesthetics: a decision to highlight the band’s big, brawny arena rockers, the best of which (“Can’t Get Enough,” “Bad Company,” “Ready for Love,” “Feel Like Makin’ Love,” “Shooting Star,” “Rock ‘n’ Roll Fantasy”) are quintessential classic rock staples. The remaining 13 songs here — including lesser-known singles “Movin’ On,” “Good Lovin’ Gone Bad,” “Honey Child,” and “Gone, Gone, Gone,” along with a representative portion of album cuts — show how Bad Company offered more than those well-known songs, how they moved with a steady macho assurance that stripped British blues-rock down to the loud, churning basics. ― Allmusic

A cursory glance at A Moon Shaped Pool may suggest a certain measure of indifference on the part of Radiohead. Its 11 songs are sequenced in alphabetical order—a stunt befitting a Pixies concert or perhaps a Frank Black box set, not a proper album—and many of these tunes are of an older vintage: the group began work on the opener “Burn The Witch” at the turn of the century, while the closing “True Love Waits” first appeared in concerts way back in 1995.These are the elements of a clearinghouse but with Radiohead appearances are always deceiving. A Moon Shaped Pool doesn’t play like an ill-considered collection of leftovers, it unfurls with understated ease, each silvery song shimmering into the next. The pulse rarely quickens and the arrangements seldom agitate yet the album never quite feels monochromatic. Sly, dissonant strings grace some cuts, acoustic guitars provide a pastoral counterpoint to an electronic pulse, Thom Yorke’s voice floats through the music, often functioning as nothing more than an element of a mix; what he’s saying matters not as much as how he murmurs. ― Allmusic

Such mellowed good vibes are the calling card of I Still Do, which otherwise proceeds along the same path Clapton’s records follow in the 21st century: he blends covers of well-worn blues standards with a couple of J.J. Cale tunes, a few old pop standards, a Bob Dylan chestnut, and original songs that draw upon aspects of all of these. “Spiral” and “Catch the Blues,” the two EC originals that anchor the middle of the album, are handsomely crafted tunes that complement the rest of the record; they don’t draw attention to themselves but rather show how hard “Cypress Grove” swings and how “Alabama Woman Blues” crawls, and reveal the lightness of “I Dreamed I Saw St. Augustine” and “Little Man, You’ve Had a Busy Day.” Although “I’ll Be Seeing You” ends I Still Do on a bit of a wistful note, this album is neither melancholy nor some kind of summation. It is simply Clapton being Clapton, enjoying the company of his longtime band and songs he’s loved, and here he’s fortunate enough to be produced by Johns, whose expert touch gives this weight and color absent from the otherwise amiable Old Sock. That’s enough to give I Still Do some resonance because Johns focuses not on the songs but the interplay: it’s not a vibe record so much as it’s an album about the interplay of old pros who still get a kick playing those same old changes years after they’ve become second nature. ― Allmusic

Buckingham Nicks is the debut and sole studio album by the American rock duo Buckingham Nicks. Produced by Keith Olsen, the album was released in September 1973 by Polydor Records. Buckingham Nicks is notable as an early commercial collaboration between Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham, both of whom later joined Fleetwood Mac.. The album was a commercial failure on its original release, and despite the duo’s subsequent success, it has yet to be commercially remastered or re-released on any format since 1973. The rights are now with the former couple as the original company Anthem (not the Canadian label of Rush fame) has long since become defunct.

Greatest Hits was the first hits compilation package from the rock band Fleetwood Mac, covering the period from the band’s beginning in 1968 to 1971, mostly in its original incarnation led by guitarist Peter Green. Part of the second British blues boom of the late 1960s, Fleetwood Mac enjoyed several hit singles in the UK, collated here for this album issued on CBS Records only in the UK, but available in the US as an import.

The single “Black Magic Woman” received exposure in the US via a cover by the San Francisco group Santana, who placed their version in the Billboard Top 40.

Long out of print, it has been replaced on compact disc by the 2002 compilation The Best of Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac on the Sony International label, which now owns the Columbia/CBS catalogue.

A very similar release with the same title and same cover was released by Sony BMG in 1989, but consisted of the tracks from The Pious Bird of Good Omen plus “Shake Your Moneymaker” and “Love That Burns”.

The album gatefold shows a full-size photo of the post-Green line up of the band with Christine McVie (née Perfect), even though she just plays piano on a couple of tracks and was not a full member until after Kiln House was released.

“The Green Manalishi”, “Oh Well”, “Rattlesnake Shake”, and “Dragonfly” were licensed from Warner (then Kinney) and “Man of the World” from Immediate; the others were on Blue Horizon originally.

The 40th Anniversary La Grandé Edition, as it is being called, will be a 2CD+2DVD set that will feature a new stereo and surround sound mix of the album by Steven Wilson along with seven bonus tracks, six of which are previously unreleased.

The second CD in the package features a live recording of the band performing at the Olympia in Paris on July 5, 1975, a few months prior to the release of Minstrel In The Gallery. A 5.1 surround mix of this live performance is also included on one of the DVDs (King Crimson guitarist Jakko Jakszyk mixed the stereo and 5.1) along with an eight and a half minute film of the band performing Minstrel In The Gallery in Paris from July 1975.

The other DVD includes the new Steven Wilson 5.1 (along with Summerday Sands and a very different version of Requiem in 5.1), flat transfers of the original LP mix at 96/24 and a flat transfer of the original QUAD mix. Both of these mixes include the B-side Summerday Sands.

Joe Cocker’s debut album holds up extraordinarily well across four decades, the singer’s performance bolstered by some very sharp playing, not only by his established sideman/collaborator Chris Stainton, but also some top-notch session musicians, among them drummer Clem Cattini, Steve Winwood on organ, and guitarists Jimmy Page and Albert Lee, all sitting in. It’s Cocker’s voice, a soulful rasp of an instrument backed up by Madeline Bell, Sunny Weetman and Rossetta Hightower that carries this album and makes “Change in Louise,” “Feeling Alright,” “Just Like a Woman,” “I Shall Be Released,” and even “Bye Bye Blackbird” into profound listening experiences. But the surprises in the arrangements, tempo, and approaches taken help make this an exceptional album. Tracks like “Just Like a Woman,” with its soaring gospel organ above a lean textured acoustic and light electric accompaniment, and the guitar-dominated rendition of “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood” — the formal debut of the Grease Band on record — all help make this an exceptional listening experience. Stevie Nicks’ solo career was off to an impressive, if overdue, start with Bella Donna, which left no doubt that she could function quite well without the input of her colleagues in Fleetwood Mac. Featuring members of Soundgarden and what would soon become Pearl Jam, Temple of the Dog’s lone eponymous album might never have reached a wide audience if not for Pearl Jam’s breakout success a year later. In turn, by providing the first glimpse of Chris Cornell’s more straightforward, classic rock-influenced side, Temple of the Dog helped set the stage for Soundgarden’s mainstream breakthrough with Superunknown. Nearly every founding member of Pearl Jam appears on Temple of the Dog (including the then-unknown Eddie Vedder), so perhaps it isn’t surprising that the record sounds like a bridge between Mother Love Bone’s theatrical ’70s-rock updates and Pearl Jam’s hard-rocking seriousness. What is surprising, though, is that Cornell is the dominant composer, writing the music on seven of the ten tracks (and lyrics on all). Keeping in mind that Soundgarden’s previous album was the overblown metallic miasma of Louder Than Love, the accessibly warm, relatively clean sound of Temple of the Dog is somewhat shocking, and its mellower moments are minor revelations in terms of Cornell’s songwriting abilities. It isn’t just the band, either — he displays more emotional range than ever before, and his melodies and song structures are (for the most part) pure, vintage hard rock. In fact, it’s almost as though he’s trying to write in the style of Mother Love Bone — which makes sense, since Temple of the Dog was a tribute to that band’s late singer Andrew Wood. Not every song here is directly connected to Wood; once several specific elegies were recorded, additional material grew quickly out of the group’s natural chemistry. As a result, there’s a very loose, jam-oriented feel to much of the album, and while it definitely meanders at times, the result is a more immediate emotional impact. The album’s strength is its mournful, elegiac ballads, but thanks to the band’s spontaneous creative energy and appropriately warm sound, it’s permeated by a definite, life-affirming aura. That may seem like a paradox, but consider the adage that funerals are more for the living than the dead; Temple of the Dog shows Wood’s associates working through their grief and finding the strength to move on. ― Allmusic
