Eric Clapton’s new millennium has largely been defined by collaborations with friends, beginning with a duet album with B.B. King following through with a Cream reunion and closing with tours with his former Blind Faith running mate, Steve Winwood. Clapton and Winwood did three concerts together at Madison Square Garden in February 2008 and the results were fruitful enough to spawn this double-disc album — along with its accompanying DVD set — and a moderately scaled 2009 tour. Live from Madison Square Garden culls 21 highlights from those three nights and spreads them over two discs, sequencing the songs so Traffic numbers alternate with selections from Blind Faith, Derek & the Dominos, blues standards, a handful of Clapton’s hits, and a heavy dose of Hendrix, who has no less than three songs here. That extended salute to Jimi is a good indication of the vibe here — this is a genuine shared co-billing with Clapton and Winwood trading vocals and solos almost equally. There’s not much ego here and not much hunger, either, with the two stars sliding into a relaxed groove that yields plenty of rewards. There’s a comfortable touch to their playing that’s greatly appealing, and the straightforward setting places the spotlight directly on their interplay. Clapton and Winwood might roll easy but they can still create some sparks, sometimes in unexpected places, such as the somewhat forgotten ’80s hits “Forever Man” and “Split Decision,” both which are highlights here. Ultimately, this isn’t an album of moments, but rather a sustained whole that finds Clapton and Winwood egging each other on to produce a wholly satisfying, if not quite surprising, reunion. ― Allmusic

Steven Wilson fans have been primed for The Future Bites since he released To the Bone in 2017. That record, and the subsequent 4½ EP, were deliberately “pop” responses to his three-album dalliance with prog — Raven That Refused to Sing, Hand. Cannot. Erase, and Grace for Drowning. In contrast to the above, The Future Bites is a slick exercise in Wilson’s oft-articulated love of synth pop and electronic music. It’s a loose concept set about the treachery that rampant consumerism foists upon the world, and the danger a technological society imposes on personal identity.

Given the musical m.o. here, it should come as no surprise that the production on these nine songs is slick, even icy. It contrasts sharply with most of Wilson’s songwriting that remains saturated in welcoming, effusive melodies and hooks. On most tracks, guitars and drums are subservient to keyboards and electronic rhythms and soundscapes. As usual, the studio cast is stellar. It includes keyboardists Adam Holzman and Richard Barbieri, bassist Nick Beggs, drummer Michael Spearman, sonic architect and beat maestro Faultline (David Kosten), and backing vocalists Wendy Harriott, Bobbie Gordon, and Crystal Williams. ― Allmusic

OK Human is a quintessential Weezer title, a joke that camouflages sincere intent. By winking at Radiohead’s classic OK Computer, it also acknowledges that this album is inherently human music, a collection of songs that tug at sometimes complicated emotions. Loneliness lingers at the margins of OK Human but the album never feels lonesome due to how the songs are dressed by a large orchestra, their strings softening the edges of Rivers Cuomo’s compositions and underscoring their essential warmth. As Cuomo elliptically acknowledges on “Playing My Piano,” these songs were largely written on a keyboard, a shift away from his trusty guitar. Occasionally, the instrumental transition results in a different kind of song for Cuomo: moody, contemplative pieces that seem to hang suspended, such as the ballads “Bird with a Broken Wing” and “Dead Roses.” Just as often, the orchestral arrangements have the effect of reinvigorating familiar Weezer tricks. Listen closely and it’s possible to hear how the four-piece rock band would’ve barreled through “All My Favorite Songs” or how they would’ve functioned as a boisterous counterpoint to the riffing misanthropy of “Aloo Gobi” and “Grapes of Wrath,” but the lack of a guitar roar helps steer attention to Cuomo’s melodicism and how his barbed humor can intertwine deeply with his feelings, resulting in pop songs that simultaneously prick and soothe. Cuomo’s dedication to his comfortable tropes means OK Human doesn’t sound like a radical departure for Weezer. Nevertheless, the album feels like a departure: with its soft orchestral balm and sweet melancholic undertow, OK Human offers a singular, complete listening experience unlike anything else in their catalog. ― Allmusic

During 1956-57 trumpeter Donald Byrd and altoist Phil Woods (both important up-and-coming players) were regular members of pianist George Wallington’s quintet. For this CD reissue, bassist Teddy Kotick and drummer Art Taylor complete the group on a program that includes three standards (“Our Delight,” “Our Love Is Here to Stay” and “What’s New”), a pair of Woods originals (“Together We Wail” and “But George”) and Frank Foster’s “Foster Dulles.” The music falls between bebop and hard bop with Woods sounding quite strong while Byrd comes across as a promising (but not yet mature) youngster. A fine example of this somewhat forgotten but talented group, easily recommended to bop collectors. ― Allmusic

For many serious jazz fans, no pianist has ever approached the technical mastery of Art Tatum, though his virtuoso skills usually meant he was at his best unaccompanied. Many of his recordings from the 1930s and ’40s were limited by the deficiencies of recording methods at the time. Piano Starts Here, long considered one of Tatum’s definitive albums, combined four solos from a 1933 studio session (his first as a soloist, aside from a test pressing a year earlier), and a fabulous solo concert at the Shrine Auditorium in 1949 (the latter issued as an Armed Forces Radio Service 16″ transcription disc), which has been reissued many times over the decades. But there were several problems with these releases. The pitch was slightly too slow on the live material.
